He can be played across the entire game, but access to him is tied to Story Pack 1 rather than every base-game purchase.
What the “tonight” tease meant
The headline’s “tonight” referred to September 27, 2025, when Forbes reported that Borderlands 4 would make a surprise appearance at Tokyo Game Show. The report described a teaser about “our hand” accompanied by cards and interpreted it as hinting at a card-themed Vault Hunter.

Can you play as C4SH in the base game?
C4SH is playable across the entire game, but the official update says Story Pack 1 is required to access him. The pack is included with Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition and the Borderlands 4 Vault Hunter Pack, and it is also sold separately. The base game is required as well. Inclusion and availability can depend on the edition and platform, so check the current listing for the version you intend to buy; owning only the base game does not mean Story Pack 1 is included.
Owners of Story Pack 1 can create a new Vault Hunter who starts directly in its content at level 13, according to the same launch update. This is an option for beginning that content with a new character, not a requirement to start the game that way.

What changed after C4SH launched?
The April 29, 2026 Version 1.6 update notes refer to C4SH as the latest Vault Hunter and record follow-up changes to his interactions and skill trees, along with changes involving Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. The reveal and release are complete; the character has also received post-launch updates.
