Valve Corporation is the company behind Steam, and Gabe Newell is its founder and named CEO. Valve has not published a current shareholder list or an ownership percentage for Newell or anyone else, so the company’s official materials do not establish who owns what share of Valve today. Anyone who gives a precise stake is going beyond what Valve has disclosed.

Valve Corporation and Steam are different names for related things

Steam is a service operated by Valve Corporation. Valve’s legal notice identifies the corporation as registered in Washington State, with its business address in Bellevue, Washington. When people ask who owns Steam, the accurate answer is Valve Corporation, since Steam is a product line of that company rather than a separate legal entity with its own owners.

Who founded Valve and who leads it

Valve states that it was founded in 1996. Its official People page describes Gabe Newell’s path this way: he worked at Microsoft, and then, in Valve’s words, “Then he started Valve.” Valve’s staff material identifies Newell as the company’s founder, and its legal notice names him as CEO.

Founder and CEO are the titles Valve itself uses. They describe roles, not equity. A person can lead a company without holding a majority stake, and an official title does not tell you how shares are divided.

What Valve has said about financing

An older Valve employee handbook states: “Valve is self-funded. We haven’t ever brought in outside financing.” That is a first-party statement that, at the time the handbook was written, Valve had not taken outside investment. It is a historical claim about funding, not a current ownership breakdown. The handbook does not include a capitalization table, and it does not say whether any ownership arrangement has changed since it was published.

Valve’s About page gives the company’s origin for Steam: “We created Steam in 2003 to serve as a digital content distribution channel, before app stores existed.” That statement dates the service, not the company’s shareholders.

Why third-party ownership claims need caution

Online pages sometimes state that Newell holds a majority of Valve, or give a specific percentage. Those claims are usually unsourced or secondhand. A verified ownership figure would normally come from a public filing or a direct disclosure by the company, and neither is available in Valve’s official materials. Until one appears, treat any specific percentage as an estimate rather than a fact.

How to check for updates

  • Start with Valve’s own pages: the legal notice, the People page, and the About page.
  • Look for any statement from Valve about a new financing round, a sale, or a change in control. A company this size would be expected to make such an announcement, though it has no obligation to disclose private shareholdings.
  • Be skeptical of anything that gives an exact percentage without a link to Valve or a regulatory document.

Valve’s ownership structure is not public in detail. The answer that holds up is simple: Valve Corporation operates Steam, Gabe Newell is its founder and CEO, and the company has not disclosed how its equity is divided.
