The earliest documented trail points to anonymous users on 4chan’s /v/ board in 2018, but it does not establish who made the model or whether that person was also responsible for the first posts about it.
What is Grotesque Steve?
Grotesque Steve, also called Steveposting or Creepy Steve, is an eerie 3D rendering of Steve from Minecraft. Early posts used the image while arguing that Steve should be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Know Your Meme’s history of Grotesque Steve describes the meme and its early context.
What does the 2018 origin trail show?
- September 22, 2018: Know Your Meme says an anonymous /v/ user coined “Steveposting” in a thread about whether Steve might join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- October 1, 2018: The entry records an anonymous 4chan user posting a 3D rendering of Steve to /v/ and arguing for his inclusion in the game.
- Following months: More threads featuring 3D Steve images appeared. The entry says the original creator later shared a download link for the model, but it does not name that person.
The timeline is an origin trail, not a confirmed identity. It distinguishes the user who coined “Steveposting,” the user who posted the cited rendering, and the person who made or shared the downloadable model; the account does not establish that they were the same person.
Is the creator credited in later projects?
No. A later Minecraft Bedrock add-on, Grotesque Steve Disc Be, is credited to KingGroSteve on its CurseForge listing. The listing describes a port of music discs from an original Java mod and credits the audio to the original creators; it does not identify the maker of the Grotesque Steve model. A credit for a later add-on is not evidence of authorship of the earlier meme.

What can be said with confidence?
Know Your Meme’s entry, updated October 1, 2020, is a secondary account and supplies no real-world name for the creator. CyberPost also says the creator is unknown in its June 9, 2025 article, “Who made Grotesque Steve?” Neither source establishes a named author. The supported answer is therefore that Grotesque Steve’s original maker remains unknown, with early activity traced to anonymous 4chan users in 2018.
