She offers to play the role and help the Tarnished turn runes into strength, then says she has acted as a Finger Maiden but “am no maiden.”
What does a Finger Maiden do?
Melina describes Finger Maidens as servants of the Two Fingers who offer guidance and aid to the Tarnished. When she first meets the player character, she says they are maidenless and offers to take on the role, including helping them turn runes into strength as they seek the Elden Ring. Eldenpedia’s Melina dialogue entry reproduces her explanation:
“Have you heard of the Finger Maidens? They serve the Two Fingers, offering guidance, and aid, to the Tarnished.”
Was Melina really a Finger Maiden?
Not according to her own description. Melina performs a maiden-like role for the player, but later clarifies: “I’ve acted the finger maiden yet I can offer no guidance, I am no maiden.” The distinction is between what she does for the Tarnished and what she is: she takes on the role, while explicitly saying she is not a maiden. The same dialogue entry reproduces both statements.

Is Hyetta the Tarnished’s maiden?
No. Hyetta is a separate character whose dialogue describes her own pursuit of becoming a Finger Maiden. She says she is following a distant light that she believes will lead her to her “true duty, as a Finger Maiden.” That is her personal aim, not an indication that she was assigned to guide the player character. See Hyetta’s dialogue entry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was another maiden assigned to the Tarnished?
The cited dialogue does not name a separate Finger Maiden assigned to the player before Melina’s offer. That leaves the identity of any other intended or unseen maiden unestablished; it does not prove that no other maiden exists in the wider world. Claims naming a different maiden should be treated as speculation unless supported by additional in-game evidence.
