The second number is the running session’s effective MaxPlayers. It can differ from the value you remember entering because an existing world stores its own setting, a startup argument can override stored XML, or the server may be loading a different save or platform profile.

What the two numbers mean
Space Engineers displays player capacity as players online / maximum possible players. In 4/16, four players are connected and the session currently allows up to 16. The denominator is calculated from the settings used by the session that is running now; it is not a cached copy of a value shown in a setup menu.

That distinction matters when you edit a profile, restart the wrong instance, or change a setting after a world has already been created. The server browser can therefore continue to show an apparently old value even though one configuration screen contains your new number.
Where Space Engineers gets the maximum-player value
Existing worlds: the save’s Sandbox.sbc
A pre-existing world keeps session settings in its own save. For an existing world, the setting to check is the Sandbox.sbc file in the directory that the running server actually loads. Inside that XML file, look for the MaxPlayers element and its numeric value:

<MaxPlayers>16</MaxPlayers>Changing a general server profile does not necessarily change this value in an already-created save. If the save still contains 16, the session can continue to advertise 16 even when a separate profile says something else.
New worlds: the dedicated-server configuration
When you create a new world through the dedicated-server setup, the initial session settings come from the dedicated-server configuration or profile used for that creation. This is a different lifecycle from editing an existing save. A value entered in the creation profile can be correct for a new world while an older world continues to use its own Sandbox.sbc.

Always establish whether you are changing a new-world profile or an existing save before deciding that the setting was ignored. The two cases can legitimately involve different files.

Launch arguments: -maxPlayers
The dedicated-server executable accepts an explicit startup override in this form:
-maxPlayers <number>The executable parses that argument as the dedicated-server maximum-player override. When it is present, the command-line value takes precedence over the stored setting you expected the server to use. A stale argument in a shortcut, batch file, service definition, or host-control panel is therefore a common reason for an unchanged denominator.
For example, a startup command that still contains -maxPlayers 16 can make the session advertise 16 even after you edit the save to another number. Remove the argument when the save should control the value, or change the number when an explicit server-wide override is intentional.

Check the active instance in the right order
Use this sequence on a self-managed dedicated server. Stop before editing so the process cannot rewrite your changes during shutdown or startup.
- Stop the server cleanly. Shut down the exact instance that supplies the session shown in the multiplayer list. Editing while it is running can be followed by the server writing its previous in-memory settings back to disk.
- Identify the world directory loaded by that instance. Use the active save path shown by the dedicated-server manager, service definition, or startup configuration. Do not assume the most recently edited folder is active; multiple saves can exist on the same machine.
- Open that world’s
Sandbox.sbc. Search for<MaxPlayers>and record the number between the opening and closing tags. This is the per-world value for an existing save. - Inspect the dedicated-server profile or configuration. This is especially important if the world was newly created or if a manager creates saves from a template. Confirm that the profile you inspected belongs to the same server instance and save path.
- Search every startup location for
-maxPlayers. Check the desktop shortcut target, batch or shell script, Windows service definition, scheduled task, container command, and any provider control panel. Correct or remove a stale argument such as-maxPlayers 16. - Start the same instance again. Avoid switching to a different profile or world during the test. Allow the process to finish loading before checking the multiplayer screen.
- Verify the live value in-game. Read the multiplayer display as
online/max. The denominator shown there is the effective value for that running session. - Investigate reversion if necessary. Stop the server, compare file modification times, and check which path changed. If a manager or provider rewrites the save or command line at startup, its profile or automation is the layer that must be corrected.
How to interpret common examples
The list shows 4/16 after you entered 8
Four is the current online population; 16 is the active maximum. First check the loaded save’s Sandbox.sbc. If it contains 16, you edited a different layer or a different save. If it contains 8, search the launch command for -maxPlayers 16 or another manager setting that writes 16 at startup.
The list shows 4/8 even though the save says 16
An external limit may be applying. Player-hosted worlds are capped at eight in the documented session reference, and platform limits can vary. A player-hosted or console environment should therefore not be evaluated by the same assumptions as a self-managed dedicated PC server.

The value changes back after every restart
A process is rewriting the setting, or the server is starting with a different profile or save path. Compare the timestamps of Sandbox.sbc and the relevant profile after a restart, then inspect the startup command used by the service or manager. The file that changes immediately before the denominator reappears identifies the layer overriding your manual edit.
Documented limits and platform differences
The current SessionSettings reference documents a dedicated-server GUI range of 2 to 64 players. The same reference states that player-hosted worlds are capped at 8 players. Those figures describe the documented interface and player-hosted rule; they do not guarantee that every platform, edition, or hosting provider exposes the same capacity.

Choosing the correct remedy
Change the world only
Edit the active save’s Sandbox.sbc when you want one existing world to advertise a different maximum and no command-line override is intended. This is a per-world change and does not automatically alter other saves.

Apply a server-wide startup policy
Use -maxPlayers <number> when the dedicated-server process should enforce one value regardless of a save’s stored setting. Keep the argument documented in the service or script so a later profile edit does not create a confusing conflict.
Configure a new world
Set the dedicated-server profile used during world creation, then confirm the resulting save after the world exists. The creation profile and the new save are related but should not be treated as interchangeable once the world has been established.
Use a managed control panel
In a managed environment, the panel may generate the startup command, select the save path, or regenerate configuration files. Make the change in the panel’s active server profile, then verify the generated command and loaded world rather than editing an inactive copy on disk.
Preventing slot-count surprises
- Keep one documented save path for each server instance and label profiles with the world they create.
- Record whether the intended authority is the per-world XML value or a command-line override.
- After changing capacity, restart the same instance and check the live
online/maxdisplay. - Search deployment scripts and service definitions whenever a value is unexpectedly stable across edits.
- Back up the save before editing
Sandbox.sbc, and make one change at a time so the source of a reversion is clear.
What to remember
The denominator in the multiplayer list is the maximum used by the running session. For an existing world, start with that world’s Sandbox.sbc; for a newly created world, verify the dedicated-server profile that created it; and in every dedicated setup, check for -maxPlayers because an explicit launch argument can override stored XML. If those values agree but the display still differs, check that the process loaded the intended save and then account for platform or provider limits.
