Activision issued a cease-and-desist order against H2M, a fan project designed to recreate classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer using the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. On August 15, 2024, the team said it was shutting the project down, one day before its planned release. The reason Activision acted is not established by a public explanation from the company.
What was the H2M mod?
H2M was a fan-made effort to bring the multiplayer experience of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Its plans included maps from both games and a refreshed take on MW2’s prestige system. Those were planned features, not content made publicly available through H2M: the project was canceled before launch. GamesBeat’s report and GameSpot’s coverage describe the project and its intended base game.

When and why was it shut down?
H2M had planned to launch on August 16, 2024. The previous day, the team announced that it had received a cease-and-desist order on behalf of Activision Publishing and would comply. Its statement said: “We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently.” The H2 Multiplayer Mod team’s announcement was dated August 15, 2024.
The specific reason for Activision’s action has not been publicly established in the available reporting. GameSpot reported that H2M team member Watchful Wolf said Activision was concerned about the mod’s popularity and its proximity to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and did not want it to interfere with potential sales of that game. That is an attributed allegation, not a confirmed explanation from Activision; GameSpot said the claim was difficult to verify and that it had contacted the company for comment. The order itself and a direct explanation from Activision are not included in the cited coverage. GameSpot’s report on the allegation provides that qualification.

What the Steam activity does—and does not—show
H2M anticipation coincided with increased attention to Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam. GamesBeat reported that the game reached its highest Steam player peak since its 2017 launch, citing SteamCharts, but gave no player-count figure. It also reported that the game was 50% off from August 5–14, 2024, and ranked third on Steam’s top sellers list during that period. These are historical reports about August 2024, not current sales or player figures. GamesBeat’s coverage gives the context.
GameSpot also reported that recent Steam reviews turned “mostly negative” after the shutdown news and noted that the game regularly goes on sale. That timing does not establish that the sale was arranged around H2M, that H2M caused the reported sales activity, or that any of those factors explain Activision’s decision. GameSpot’s report covers the reviews and sale context.

Was H2M released or is it available now?
No. H2M was canceled before its planned August 16, 2024 release, and its team said operations were ending immediately and permanently. The project’s intended features should not be treated as an officially released or playable H2M package. H2M was a separate fan project built around Modern Warfare Remastered; it was not the original 2009 MW2 multiplayer itself.
