Open Moshpit was a Black Ops 7 beta playlist in which Activision said skill consideration in matchmaking was “drastically reduced.” The aim was to create more varied matches—not to eliminate skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) or guarantee better ping or match quality. Activision’s beta notes later said Open Matchmaking with minimal skill consideration would be the default for Black Ops 7 Multiplayer at launch.
What was Open Moshpit?
Open Moshpit was one of two multiplayer playlists Activision offered during the Black Ops 7 beta. In its October 4, 2025 beta patch notes, the Call of Duty team said skill consideration was “drastically reduced” in Open Moshpit, with the goal of more varied match experiences and outcomes. The notes described a matchmaking experiment and said testing would continue for the remainder of the beta.
“Reduced” is the important distinction: Activision did not say skill stopped mattering or that SBMM was removed. The notes also recorded the company’s later stated plan for launch: “At launch, Open Matchmaking with minimal skill consideration will be the default for Black Ops 7 Multiplayer.” That describes the announced design, not proof that skill has no influence on individual matches.
How did Moshpit and Open Moshpit differ?
Activision listed the same maps and modes for both playlists. The described difference was the amount of skill consideration in matchmaking.

Activision said the goal was a wider variety of match experiences and outcomes. It did not publish a controlled comparison showing that Open Moshpit produced better matches, lower latency, or greater player satisfaction.
Does Open Moshpit mean SBMM was removed?
No. The official wording was that skill consideration was “drastically reduced” in the beta playlist and that “minimal skill consideration” would be the launch default. Those phrases support describing a less skill-focused matchmaking approach, not a system with no skill consideration.

Activision’s 2024 matchmaking explanation identifies skill or performance as one of several factors in matchmaking. It describes connection as the most critical and heavily weighted factor, followed by time to match, and also lists playlist diversity, recent maps and modes, input device, platform, and voice chat. That is general context, not a technical description of exactly how the Black Ops 7 beta’s Open Moshpit algorithm worked.
A second 2024 matchmaking article says connection quality and time to match are top priorities. It also says skill is considered when grouping players into a lobby and when balancing teams at intermission, and that skill targets are loosened faster than delta-ping targets while forming a lobby. These general statements help explain why “less SBMM” does not necessarily mean skill is irrelevant, but they should not be read as a precise account of every Black Ops 7 beta decision.

When was Open Moshpit available?
Open Moshpit was part of the 2025 Black Ops 7 beta, not a playlist announced for a future beta. Activision’s August 2025 community update scheduled Early Access Beta for October 2 and Open Beta for October 5, with the beta running across platforms through October 8. The Open Moshpit patch-note section was dated October 4.

A November 2025 report by Dot Esports relayed Treyarch’s response to creator Xclusive Ace: the studio maintained that Open Matchmaking had not changed from beta, while player demographics and playlist selections differed between beta and launch. That is secondary reporting, rather than a detailed technical specification of the matchmaking system.

The official beta notes establish Activision’s stated intent and launch plan; they do not provide numerical results or a controlled evaluation of Open Moshpit. Claims that it improved latency, retention, satisfaction, fairness, or match quality therefore go beyond what those notes demonstrate.
