Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a block breaks but no item appears, the usual causes are a tool that is the wrong type or too low a tier for that block, an enchantment that changed the drop, a world setting that stops tile drops, or a full inventory that prevents pickup. Work through these in that order. The exact answer depends on the block, whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition, and your game version, so those details matter when a problem persists.
Start with the block you actually broke
Similar-looking blocks can have different drop rules. Stone, deepslate, and ore variants are easy to confuse, and so are a block’s natural form and a placed or processed version. Confirm the exact block name, either by pressing F3 and pointing at it in Java Edition or by checking the block’s name in the inventory and creative menus, then look up that block’s specific mining and drop requirements. A general rule about “ores” is not enough, because each block has its own entry.

Check the tool type and tier
Many blocks will break with any tool, but only drop their item when mined with a tool of the required type and a minimum tier. The Minecraft Wiki’s mining guidance describes this as mining with the wrong tool: the block still disappears, but the player receives nothing. This is the most common explanation when a block visibly breaks and nothing is collected.
Use this table as a starting point. It lists values from the Minecraft Wiki’s entries for these blocks; confirm them against the page for your edition and version.

| Block | Required tool and minimum tier | Result with a weaker or wrong tool |
|---|---|---|
| Coal ore | Any pickaxe (wooden or better) | Drops nothing if the pickaxe is not a pickaxe |
| Iron ore | Stone pickaxe or better | Breaks, but yields no iron ore item if the tool is a wooden pickaxe or the wrong type |
| Diamond ore | Iron pickaxe or better | Weaker tools yield no diamond |
A slow break is a useful clue that the tool may be wrong for the block, but speed alone does not prove what the drop should be. Some blocks are slow to break with any tool, and some are quick with the wrong one. Check the tier, not the timing.
Check whether an enchantment changed the drop
Two enchantments change block drops, and neither applies to every block.

Silk Touch
Silk Touch makes certain blocks drop as the block itself rather than their usual item. If you mined a block with a Silk Touch tool and got the block in your inventory, that is expected behavior, not a missing drop. If you used a Silk Touch tool and got nothing, the tool may also be below the required tier for that block.
Fortune
Minecraft Help’s enchantment reference describes Fortune as: “Fortune – Increases certain item drop chances from blocks.” Fortune raises the chance of extra drops for some blocks, such as certain ores. It does not change blocks that have no applicable drop bonus, so a Fortune pickaxe on those blocks will look the same as an ordinary one. Diamond ore is a clear example of block-specific behavior: Fortune can increase diamond drops, but it still needs an iron pickaxe or better to yield any diamond.

Check the world’s tile-drop setting
Each world has a game rule that controls whether blocks drop items when broken. If that rule is turned off, a block can break with no drop at all, regardless of your tool.
- Bedrock Edition: Microsoft Learn’s gamerule reference for the Bedrock stable documentation identifies
dotiledropsas the rule controlling tile drops. Check its current value in your world’s settings or with the gamerule command in your edition. - Java Edition: the equivalent rule is named
doTileDrops. Confirm the name and current value for your game version before changing it.
Command names and interface labels can change between editions and versions. If the rule is off in a world you did not create, check with whoever set it up, especially on a server or Realm.

Check pickup and inventory space
A block can drop its item into the world and the item still does not reach your inventory. The Minecraft Wiki’s beginner guide explains that a full inventory cannot pick up new items unless the dropped item can merge into a stack of the same item that is not already full. Open your inventory and look for a free slot or a partly filled stack of that item. Then look around the block for a dropped item sitting on the ground and walk over it.
Items left on the ground are not gone the moment they land, but they do not reach you while your inventory is full. Make room, then go back to the item.

Work through a persistent case
If the block, tool, enchantment, world setting, and inventory all check out, the cause may lie in a specific setup. Collect these details before troubleshooting further:
- Java or Bedrock Edition, and the exact game version
- The exact block name
- The tool type and tier you used, and whether it was your only tool of that kind
- Any enchantments on the tool, including Silk Touch and Fortune
- Whether this is a single-player world, a server, a Realm, or a custom world with add-ons or plugins
Standard vanilla behavior explains most missing drops. Server plugins, add-ons, and custom datapacks can change drop rules for individual blocks, and the official references cited here do not cover those changes. For those cases, check the server’s or add-on’s own documentation or ask its administrator.
When you report the issue, give the details above. A specific block with a specific tool is far easier to diagnose than a general description of a missing item.
