Minecraft’s Far Lands disappeared from Java Edition in Beta 1.8 because a change to world generation fixed the numerical behavior that produced them. They were an unintended terrain-generation anomaly, not a planned destination. The available accounts document the change and its effect, but do not confirm whether Mojang set out specifically to remove the Far Lands.
What were the Far Lands?
The Far Lands were dramatically warped terrain generated in older versions of Minecraft: Java Edition. They were a side effect of the terrain-generation system, rather than a designed region or standalone feature.
The Minecraft Wiki records them in Java versions from Infdev 2010/03/27 through Beta 1.7.3, with Beta 1.8 as the removal point. They began roughly 12,550,824 blocks from the world center. Minecraft Wiki: Java Edition Far Lands
What caused the Far Lands?
The technical account centers on numerical limits in terrain generation. Minecraft’s terrain noise calculation combined floating-point inputs with noise values indexed by integers. At about 12,550,824 blocks from the center, the input reached the signed 32-bit integer boundary; beyond that point, the generator repeatedly used the limiting value, creating the abnormal terrain. A Minecraft Feedback post describes the underlying problem as floating-point precision errors and says the Beta 1.8 world-generation change resolved errors associated with generating the Far Lands. It is a community-authored explanation hosted on Minecraft’s feedback platform, not a direct statement from Mojang about its intent. Minecraft Feedback: The Far Lands
Did Mojang deliberately remove them?
“Removed” accurately describes the result: the Far Lands were no longer generated after the Beta 1.8 changes. The sources support the explanation that a world-generation change corrected the numerical behavior behind the anomaly. They do not establish that developers specifically targeted the Far Lands as a feature they wanted to eliminate.

That distinction matters: fixing the terrain-generation problem explains why the Far Lands disappeared, but it is not proof of a separate decision about the Far Lands themselves. No direct, attributable developer explanation of the removal decision is established by these accounts.

This timeline is about Java Edition: the documented Far Lands ran from Infdev 2010/03/27 through Beta 1.7.3 and were fixed in Beta 1.8. Other editions have their own terrain-generation histories, and the sources cited here do not establish whether or how they had equivalent terrain anomalies.
