If AMD FSR 4 is missing, first check your graphics card, the game’s support and integration, and which name the setting uses. AMD now calls its machine-learning upscaling feature FSR Upscaling, although some games still label it “AMD FSR 4.” It is not a universal switch that can add FSR 4 to every game: the game must support a compatible route, and the driver-upgrade route has additional requirements.
What “FSR 4” may be called now
AMD renamed FSR 4 to FSR Upscaling as part of the broader FSR “Redstone” feature naming. That change can make the option harder to spot: a game may still show “AMD FSR 4,” while AMD Software or a newer game menu may use “FSR Upscaling.” Look in the game’s graphics or video settings for both names, and do not assume that the feature is absent just because the exact words “FSR 4” are not shown.

Also distinguish upscaling from frame generation. These are separate features, and a game’s support for one does not establish support for the other. AMD’s documentation lists requirements by feature, title, driver and GPU family, so check the entry that matches what you want to enable rather than treating every FSR-related option as interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAMD’s FSR Technologies page explains the naming change and says some games have native integration of ML-based FSR Upscaling, which players can enable directly in the game menu. That means there may be no separate per-game switch to turn on in Adrenalin for a native implementation. Conversely, seeing an FSR option in Adrenalin does not mean every title can use it: the driver-upgrade route is limited to eligible games and integrations.

Check your GPU before changing settings
AMD’s FSR Technologies page lists Radeon RX 7000 Series and RX 9000 Series graphics for machine-learning-based FSR Upscaling. If your card is outside those families, the ML-based upscaling option may not be available, even if that game offers older FSR options or another form of upscaling. Confirm your exact GPU model in Windows or AMD Software, then compare it with AMD’s current feature and game-support information.
Use the same check for frame generation. A title’s support for ML-based FSR Upscaling is not proof that it supports ML-based frame generation on your card. The supported-games listing separates features and may also state a driver requirement. Verify the specific game, GPU family, desired feature and listed driver rather than relying on a general claim that the title “supports FSR.”
Check the card family rather than assuming that an older FSR mode and ML-based FSR Upscaling have identical hardware requirements. The question is not simply whether the game supports “FSR,” but whether the particular feature you want is supported for your GPU and through that title’s implementation. AMD’s current supported-games page is the place to confirm that combination; a support entry for one Redstone feature does not automatically cover the others.

Why a compatible GPU may still have no FSR 4 option
The game’s implementation matters. AMD describes two broad routes: some games include native integration and let players enable ML-based FSR Upscaling in the game menu; other supported games can receive an upgrade through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. The driver route does not work as a force-enable feature for any arbitrary game.
For the driver-upgrade route, AMD’s supported-games page specifies minimum integration and platform conditions. Those conditions differ according to the feature:
| Feature sought | Minimum integration AMD lists for the driver-upgrade route | Platform and API conditions |
|---|---|---|
| ML-based FSR Upscaling | FSR 3.1 or later | Windows 11; standard integration; DirectX 12 |
| ML-based frame generation | FSR 3.1.4 or later | Windows 11; standard integration; DirectX 12 |
These are requirements for the driver-upgrade route, not a blanket description of every game’s native implementation. If a game lacks the required integration, is not listed for the relevant driver feature, or is running outside the stated conditions, the Adrenalin toggle may not appear or may not take effect. A game can still offer its own native option under different menu wording; check its graphics settings as well as AMD’s current supported-games listing.
The integration version is important: FSR 3.1 or later is the stated minimum for driver-upgraded ML-based upscaling, while ML-based frame generation has a higher minimum of FSR 3.1.4. A game that meets one minimum does not necessarily meet the other. The Windows 11 and DirectX 12 conditions also apply to the driver-upgrade route described by AMD, so confirm those details before treating an absent toggle as a driver fault.

For a game’s native FSR integration
- Open the game’s graphics or video settings.
- Look for “FSR Upscaling” and “AMD FSR 4.” If the game offers a separate frame-generation setting, treat it as a distinct option.
- Choose the supported option and quality preset in the game menu. AMD says the desired quality preset can be selected there.
If neither label appears, confirm that the title actually supports the feature and that your GPU family is eligible. The presence of another FSR version in the menu does not by itself mean the game has native ML-based FSR Upscaling.
For a game upgraded through Adrenalin
- Install and update the game, then close it completely. AMD’s activation instructions begin with the game closed.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and go to Gaming > Graphics.
- Enable the applicable FSR Upscaling and/or Frame Generation toggle. Select the feature relevant to your goal; enabling one does not imply that the other is supported.
- Launch the game. Where required, open its graphics or video settings and enable its FSR 3.1 option. Choose the desired quality preset in the game menu.
If you changed a driver setting while the game was already running, close and relaunch it before deciding that the setting failed. AMD’s documented sequence applies the driver toggle before launching the title.
Do not skip the in-game step when AMD’s instructions call for it. The driver toggle and the game’s FSR 3.1 setting are parts of the same activation path: enable the applicable feature in Adrenalin first, then start the game and turn on its FSR 3.1 option where needed. If you only change one side of that sequence, the feature may remain inactive. A native integration follows a different path and should be enabled in the game’s own menu.
If the game profile or per-game toggle is missing
A missing entry under Gaming does not necessarily mean that FSR is globally unavailable. In AMD’s FSR technical-preview notes, the company reported that Adrenalin might fail to create a game profile automatically for Blades of Fire, Dragonkin and Stellar Blade. AMD’s temporary workaround for that preview-era profile issue was to enable FSR 4 in global graphics settings.
That note documents a particular issue in a technical preview; it does not establish that the same problem persists in current software, nor that a global setting is a universal fix for missing profiles. If the game is one of those titles, check the current driver notes first. Use a global toggle only as a targeted workaround when the current software and game support the feature; otherwise, verify the supported-games listing and the game’s integration before changing global graphics behavior.
The preview release notes also described support across more than 60 titles at that time. Treat that as the scale AMD listed for that preview, not a current compatibility count: the supported-games page can change, and its entries distinguish feature, driver and GPU requirements. Check the current list for the exact game rather than using an old title count to infer present support.

Check driver and game-specific history
Some failures have been tied to a particular game and driver release. AMD’s Adrenalin 25.6.3 release notes listed FSR 4 failing to enable on RX 9000 products in six games and marked the issues fixed in that release. These are historical examples, not evidence that the same failure exists in a current driver:
| Game | What AMD documented |
|---|---|
| Dragonkin: The Banished | FSR 4 not enabled on RX 9000 products; listed as fixed in Adrenalin 25.6.3. |
| Blades of Fire | FSR 4 not enabled on RX 9000 products; listed as fixed in Adrenalin 25.6.3. |
| RoadCraft | FSR 4 not enabled on RX 9000 products; listed as fixed in Adrenalin 25.6.3. |
| The Alters | FSR 4 not enabled on RX 9000 products; listed as fixed in Adrenalin 25.6.3. |
| Star Wars Outlaws | FSR 4 not enabled on RX 9000 products; listed as fixed in Adrenalin 25.6.3. |
| S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 | FSR 4 not enabled on RX 9000 products; listed as fixed in Adrenalin 25.6.3. |
AMD’s Adrenalin 25.4.1 notes separately described an FSR 4 limitation for some Windows 10 users playing Naraka: Bladepoint. That is a version- and operating-system-specific historical note, not proof of the game’s present compatibility. For a current problem, consult the latest release notes for your exact game and Windows version before reinstalling software or assuming the GPU is at fault.
These release-note examples are useful because they show that compatibility can depend on the title, GPU family, operating system and driver version together. They are not a reason to downgrade or install a particular older release without checking current notes. A release that fixed an issue listed in 25.6.3 is historical context; it does not tell you whether a later driver has a different issue or whether your current setup meets the game’s prerequisites.

- Identify the setting. Search the game menu for both “FSR Upscaling” and “AMD FSR 4”; separately identify whether you want upscaling or frame generation.
- Confirm the GPU family. Check whether your card is a Radeon RX 7000 or RX 9000 Series model for ML-based FSR Upscaling, then verify the relevant feature’s requirements.
- Check the exact title and route. Look up the game in AMD’s current supported-games listing. Establish whether it uses native integration or a driver upgrade, and whether the required feature is listed.
- Check the prerequisites. For the driver-upgrade route, compare the integration version, Windows 11 requirement and DirectX 12 condition with the feature you want.
- Use the correct activation sequence. Native integration is enabled from the game menu. For the driver route, close the game, set the applicable toggle in Adrenalin under Gaming > Graphics, relaunch, and enable FSR 3.1 in the game menu if needed.
- Review current release notes. Search for the title, your GPU family and your Windows version. Do not apply an old fixed-issue note as though it describes the current release.
This order helps separate an unsupported configuration from a missing profile or a version-specific bug. Reinstalling the driver or changing hardware before establishing the supported route can obscure the cause without addressing it.
There is no AMD-published performance or prevalence statistic specific to the problem of FSR 4 being missing or inactive, so an absent setting alone does not show how common the issue is or predict a performance result. Start with compatibility and activation checks rather than assuming a particular hardware fault. A Radeon RX 9000 Series card may be a compatibility-driven upgrade only if your current GPU is unsupported and you have decided the feature justifies new hardware; a new card cannot add the game’s required integration or fix a current driver bug.
What to include when asking AMD or the game’s support team
If the option is still missing after you have checked eligibility, the title listing, prerequisites and activation route, provide enough detail for support to identify the applicable compatibility path:

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is FSR 4 not listed by that name in my game?
AMD now calls the machine-learning-based feature FSR Upscaling, while some games may still label it AMD FSR 4. Check the game’s graphics or video menu for both names.
Can I force FSR 4 on in any game with Adrenalin?
No. The driver-upgrade route applies only to supported games with the required integration and platform conditions. AMD lists FSR 3.1 or later for ML-based upscaling and FSR 3.1.4 or later for ML-based frame generation on that route, with Windows 11, standard integration and DirectX 12 conditions.
Why does the Adrenalin toggle not appear for a supported game?
Confirm that the title is listed for the specific feature, then check the GPU, driver and integration requirements. For driver-upgraded features, close the game before changing the toggle under Gaming > Graphics, then relaunch and enable the game’s FSR 3.1 setting where needed. A missing game profile has also been reported for specific titles in AMD’s technical-preview notes, but that does not establish a current universal issue.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does FSR 4 frame generation have the same requirements as upscaling?
No. AMD lists different minimum integration versions for the driver-upgrade route: FSR 3.1 or later for ML-based upscaling, and FSR 3.1.4 or later for ML-based frame generation. Check the current supported-games entry for the exact feature.
What should I check before reinstalling a driver?
Verify the GPU family, exact game and feature listing, native versus driver-upgrade route, Windows and DirectX requirements, and the correct activation sequence. Then check the current Adrenalin release notes for your game and configuration.
The Bottom Line
FSR 4 may be labeled FSR Upscaling, and it is available only through a supported game integration and eligible hardware. Check the exact feature, GPU, game route and prerequisites first; then follow the matching in-game or Adrenalin activation sequence and consult current driver notes if it still fails.
