Creepers run away from nearby cats because Minecraft gives them an avoidance behavior. That is a gameplay mechanic—not a confirmed piece of creeper lore or a real-world explanation.
What happens when a creeper sees a cat?
A nearby cat makes a creeper flee, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s safe-home guide. The guide says this can happen even after the player has attacked the creeper, so “scared” is a useful description of the behavior rather than proof that creepers have a defined fear in the game’s lore.
Is there a story reason creepers fear cats?
No canonical explanation is established by the sources here. The behavior is documented as a game mechanic, but there is no verified developer explanation for why creepers avoid cats. Explanations based on creeper origins, cats’ real-world behavior, or other lore should be treated as speculation.
Does “cat” mean the same thing as “ocelot”?
Not in newer Java Edition advice. Mojang’s Java 1.14 release notes, published April 23, 2019, describe stray cats as tameable and ocelots as untameable, marking a distinction relevant to older instructions that may use “ocelot” where current guidance says “cat.” Those notes also say phantoms are scared of cats, but do not specify a creeper flee distance or establish a complete rule for every edition.

The Minecraft Wiki’s cat-history page records that cats began frightening creepers in Java snapshot 12w05a, after cats were introduced in version 1.2.1. This is a secondary historical account, not an official release-note explanation.

A cat can be one layer of defense around a base, but it is not a guarantee against explosions. The safe-home guide warns that creepers can begin their fuse very close to a player. Do not treat a cat as making you, your home, or nearby builds invulnerable.
