Xbox does not enable split-screen for every game. The game must support local multiplayer, and it may only allow it in certain modes. Check the exact game and mode first; then check the second controller, player-two sign-in, and any requirements the game specifies.
First, check whether the game supports split-screen
Split-screen is a feature each game implements—not a setting that Xbox can turn on for every title. Microsoft’s shared/split-screen and local co-op catalog is a useful place to look. Check the individual game listing and the publisher’s current support instructions too: support can depend on the edition or mode you want to play. Microsoft’s developer certification guidance asks studios to test split-screen when applicable; it does not require every game to include the feature: Xbox certification requirements and tests.
- Look for “Shared/split screen” or “Local multiplayer” in the Microsoft Store listing.
- Confirm the listing applies to your game edition and Xbox generation.
- Check whether local play is available in the specific mode you selected.
If the game or mode does not support local multiplayer, another controller or a console setting will not add it.
Check whether your selected mode allows local players
A game can support split-screen in one mode and exclude it from others. Halo Infinite is one example: its official guidance says split-screen is available only in competitive multiplayer, with player limits varying by mode and console generation. Halo Support’s Halo Infinite multiplayer instructions list these limits:

| Halo Infinite mode | Published local-player limit |
|---|---|
| Xbox One | Two players |
| Series X|S Arena matchmaking | Four players |

These are Halo Infinite limits, not general Xbox limits. Check your game’s own instructions for supported modes and player counts.
Make sure the second controller and account are recognized
Turn on and sync a second controller, then follow the game’s prompt to join. Some games also require player two to sign in with an account rather than join as a guest. Fortnite and Halo Infinite both specify a second controller and account in their setup instructions, and neither accepts guest accounts for the described setup.

In Fortnite, Epic’s steps are: open the Lobby, connect the second controller, choose the second player’s console account, and link that player’s Epic account when prompted. Guest and Quick Play console accounts are unsupported. See Epic’s Fortnite split-screen instructions.
Check for game-specific internet requirements
Do not assume every local multiplayer game needs an internet connection—or that none do. Epic says Fortnite local multiplayer requires a stable internet connection and works in a match, not in the Lobby or submenus. It is available only in supported experiences, which are identified by a “Local Players” tag. Those conditions are specific to Fortnite; check the publisher’s instructions for your game.

What to do if it still will not start
- Confirm support: check the exact game edition, its Store listing, and the publisher’s support page.
- Choose an eligible mode: return to a mode that supports local players, if the game restricts split-screen.
- Reconnect player two: sync the second controller and follow the game’s join prompt.
- Use the required account type: sign player two in as directed; do not use a guest account if the game disallows it.
- Meet any stated connection requirement: for Fortnite, use a stable internet connection and join a supported match.
- Note the details if the problem persists: record the Xbox generation, game edition, selected mode, error text, and whether player two can sign in. These details help identify whether the block is a game limitation or a controller, account, or connection issue.
Do you need another controller?
Only if you do not already have one and the game supports local multiplayer. A second controller is part of the setup for games such as Fortnite and Halo Infinite, but buying one cannot enable split-screen in an unsupported title or mode.

Minecraft’s official help pages cover Bedrock split-screen and multiplayer, but the detailed split-screen requirements are not established here. The multiplayer guidance says console online multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass Core; that does not establish that a subscription is needed for local-only split-screen.
