If you are actively playing and still seeing 10 FPS, check the frame-rate cap and compare your hardware with the requirements for your edition and version. The exact figure is a useful clue, not proof of a single cause.
Can Minecraft intentionally limit itself to 10 FPS?
Yes, in Java Edition. Mojang’s 2024 article about the “Reduce FPS when” feature documents a 10 FPS limit when the game window is minimized. It also describes a separate AFK limit: after more than one minute without player input, the game is limited to 30 FPS; after ten minutes without input, it is reduced to 10 FPS.
These behaviors apply to the documented Java Edition feature. The title alone does not establish whether you are playing Java or Bedrock, or whether this setting is enabled on your system.
What to check first
- Bring the game into active play. If it is minimized or has been idle, restore the window and provide input. See whether the frame rate rises.
- Check your edition. The documented idle and minimized limiter is for Java Edition; do not assume it explains a 10 FPS reading in Bedrock or on another platform.
- Review the Java video setting. Look for “Reduce FPS when” in the video settings. Mojang documents the minimized and AFK behavior under that setting.
- Check the frame-rate cap. If the game is focused and receiving input, inspect the in-game maximum frame-rate setting and other graphics settings. The symptom alone does not identify which setting, if any, is responsible.
If 10 FPS continues during active play
A persistent 10 FPS while the game is focused and receiving input is not explained by the documented idle/minimized behavior alone. The cause cannot be determined without details such as edition, version, operating system, hardware, settings, and any mods or shaders. Compare your system with the requirements for the edition and version you play before considering a hardware change.

Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements, published July 21, 2026, give the following targets. They are requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee of identical performance on every system.

The requirements page says performance and visual quality are not guaranteed on hardware below its minimum. If your graphics hardware is below the applicable target, an upgrade might be relevant—but 10 FPS by itself does not show that a new graphics card or PC is needed. Check graphics API support, VRAM, and system compatibility before buying anything.
