Minecraft commands usually fail for one of four reasons: commands are disabled for the world, you do not have permission, the command or its arguments are invalid for your edition, or it is being run in a different context than expected. Start by checking whether you play Java or Bedrock, whether the world is single-player or multiplayer, and whether you entered the command in chat or a command block.
Check your edition and where you are playing
The right fix depends on the world and execution context. Before changing settings, identify whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, whether the world is single-player, opened to LAN, a Realm, or someone else’s server, and whether you entered the command in chat or a command block. Menu labels and available commands can vary by edition and version.
Minecraft’s official commands guide explains the world settings and multiplayer permission requirements for using commands.
Check whether commands are enabled
Bedrock single-player
Open the world’s Game settings and check Allow Cheats. Enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. Turning cheats off later does not restore achievement eligibility, so consider that consequence before changing the setting. See Minecraft’s official guide and Microsoft Learn’s command introduction.

Confirm you have multiplayer permission
Being able to join a world does not necessarily mean you can run commands there. Multiplayer command use requires a sufficient permission level. On a Bedrock world, Microsoft Learn specifies the operator commands player permission for commands entered in chat and access to command blocks. On a Realm or another player’s server, ask the owner or administrator to check your permissions; changing a setting on your own device cannot grant authority on someone else’s world.
For Bedrock permission details, see Microsoft Learn’s command introduction. Do not try to bypass a server’s permission settings.

Check the command name and required arguments
In chat, commands begin with /. Follow the command name with the required arguments, separated by spaces. A misspelling, missing argument, incorrect argument order, target selector, or coordinate can make a command fail. Syntax can also differ between Java and Bedrock and between game versions, so do not assume a command copied from another edition will work unchanged.
- Enter
/helpor/help <command>to see commands and syntax available in your game. - Use the in-game autocomplete suggestions while entering the command.
- Compare the command you typed with the displayed syntax, checking spelling, spaces, argument order, selectors, and coordinates.
Microsoft Learn notes that help indicates required arguments and a command fails if a required argument is missing. Minecraft’s official guide and the Bedrock command introduction describe help and autocomplete.

Troubleshoot a command block separately
A command that works in chat may not behave the same way in a command block. In Bedrock, command blocks must be enabled, and you need the operator commands permission to access them. Microsoft Learn also states that command blocks can only be edited in Creative mode. Check the relevant world or server configuration as well as your permission to edit the block.
Execution context can change how a command’s target works. Microsoft’s Bedrock popular commands guide gives /tp @s ... as an example that does not work in a command block. Check the documentation or in-game syntax for the specific command rather than assuming a chat command transfers directly to a block.

If it still fails, capture these details
To narrow down a remaining problem, note the following before asking for help:
- Edition (Java or Bedrock), platform, and game version.
- Whether the world is single-player, LAN, a Realm, or another server.
- Whether you entered the command in chat or a command block.
- The exact command and the exact error message—or what happened instead.
- Whether other commands work in the same world.
Those details distinguish a permission or settings problem from invalid syntax or a command-block context issue. Without them, there is not enough information to identify a specific failed command reliably.
