Check the settings and installation first, then test the mod against your installed game version.
Start with the settings and game version
Enable both mod permissions
From the main menu, open Game Options > Other. Turn on both Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed, apply the changes, and restart the game. Script mods have their own permission setting; enabling custom content alone is not enough. Game updates can also turn mod settings off, so check them again after patching. Check compatibility with the patch you actually have
A mod that worked before an update may no longer work afterward. First launch the game with mods removed to see whether the unmodified game works. Then check the mod creator’s page for compatibility with your installed game update; do not assume a mod is current just because it was working before the patch.
The EA Forums “Mod and CC Issues: START HERE” index links to a patch-specific Broken and Updated list. As of September 22, 2026, it points to a list for patch 1.128. The list is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every mod is covered, and the relevant patch can change; compare it with the version installed in your game.

Verify the file location and installation
Put the script file in the active Mods folder
The usual user-data location is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. A .ts4script file should be no more than one folder deep inside Mods. For example, Mods/MyMod/mod.ts4script is one folder deep; nesting it inside several subfolders can prevent the game from finding it.
If your Documents folder was moved or is synced through OneDrive, confirm that you installed the file in the folder The Sims 4 is actually using. EA’s How to Use Mods and CC guide covers placement and installation.

Follow the creator’s instructions and install dependencies
Some mods require additional files or a particular installation step. Check the creator’s instructions for dependencies, required folders, and any in-game activation or settings. A mod can appear installed but remain inactive if one of those requirements is missing.
Clear the cache after changing mod files
After removing or replacing files in the Mods folder, delete localthumbcache.package from Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. The game recreates this file when it runs. This is a useful cleanup step after a change, but it does not make an incompatible mod compatible.

Find conflicts by testing mods in batches
If settings, placement, and compatibility check out, another mod may be conflicting. EA recommends the 50/50 method: remove mods, confirm the game works, then add files back in groups until the problem returns. Split the group that reproduces the issue and test again, repeating until you isolate the file or combination responsible. Prioritize gameplay mods over custom content, which is generally less likely to cause gameplay problems. Follow the EA Forums troubleshooting index for vanilla testing and patch-specific status links.
- Move the Mods folder contents out temporarily and launch the game to establish whether the base game works without mods.
- If it does, return a batch of mods and test the symptom.
- If the issue returns, divide that batch and test each half; if it does not, test another batch.
- Keep narrowing the problem group until you identify the culprit, then check for an update, missing dependency, or creator-provided fix.
Use error codes as clues, not a diagnosis
EA says errors 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 usually indicate a game-script issue for which a script mod could be responsible. Error 110 often appears after an update and is caused by outdated mods. These codes point toward a possible cause; they do not identify a particular mod or prove that a mod is responsible. When the problem is not a script mod
If the same problem occurs with all mods removed, do not assume a script mod is the cause. Treat it as a possible base-game or installation issue and use EA’s troubleshooting guidance. EA’s February 18, 2025 Laundry List advises removing external mods and custom content as an initial troubleshooting step when issues occur after a patch, because they may conflict with updates.
