A wandering trader is a random event, not a visitor on a fixed timer. In Java Edition, a long wait with no trader usually means a run of unlucky spawn attempts, not a broken world. The most useful check is where you are waiting: Java attempts are placed on the highest surface block, so an enclosed cave or sealed underground room gives the game nothing to test. Step out into an open area on the surface before drawing any conclusion. Bedrock Edition works differently in ways the sources behind this article did not confirm, so its specifics are covered separately below.
How wandering trader spawning works in Java Edition
According to the Minecraft Wiki, Java Edition makes a sequence of spawn attempts for wandering traders. The chance of success rises across that sequence, from 25% to 50% and then to 75%. These figures describe a probability, not a schedule, so a trader can fail to appear for a long stretch and the game is still working as described.
The same source says Java picks the highest surface block for these attempts. That detail is the reason location matters. A player waiting in a cave or under solid rock is effectively waiting where the attempts are not placed, so a long empty wait there tells you little about whether traders can spawn in that world.
The Minecraft Wiki is community-maintained, not an official Mojang reference, and the spawn figures above are best read as its documented description of the mechanic. Treat the exact percentages as wiki-reported values for Java Edition.

Troubleshooting a missing wandering trader
- Confirm your edition and version. Check whether you are playing Java or Bedrock, and note the version label on the title screen or in your launcher. Do not apply Java figures to Bedrock without checking.
- Wait on an open surface (Java). Stand in an area with open sky, not inside a cave, a mineshaft, or a sealed build, because Java places attempts on the highest surface block.
- Allow for chance. A failed run does not prove a disabled setting or a broken world. The reported sequence is probabilistic, so a single short wait is not a reliable test. Give the world more time on the surface before concluding anything is wrong.
- Check whether a trader already appeared and left. A trader may have spawned while you were away and wandered out of view. The exact despawn timing was not verified in the sources behind this article, so do not rely on a specific lifespan to decide whether one has been missed.
- Inspect commands, gamerules, server settings, and add-ons separately. The sources do not document the full current set of command, gamerule, server, or add-on controls that can affect spawning. If you use any of these, review those changes on their own rather than assuming a particular setting is the cause.
Bedrock Edition
The current Bedrock attempt interval, probability sequence, and placement rules could not be confirmed from an authoritative source for this article. The Java percentages and the highest-surface rule should not be assumed to apply to Bedrock. For Bedrock-specific behavior, check the official Minecraft release notes or help documentation for your version.
Using a spawn egg instead of waiting
A spawn egg, where your game mode and version make one available, can place a wandering trader directly and bypasses natural spawning. That makes it a convenient workaround if you need a trader now, but it is not a diagnosis. It will not tell you why natural spawning has stalled, and it does not change the attempt odds described above.

What changed in Java Edition 1.21.5
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes describe changes to wandering trader trade offers. Traders may sell additional logs, an enchanted iron pickaxe, or a potion of invisibility. The notes do not describe a change to spawn rates, so trade updates should not be read as a change to when or how often traders appear.
Mojang’s 25w07a snapshot notes described these trade changes during development. For the released version, the final Java 1.21.5 release notes are the appropriate reference.
