Selected singles have declined in 2026, but the causes differ from card to card: more copies entering circulation after products are opened or restocked, shifting collector interest, weaker competitive demand as a card nears rotation, generous pull rates in new sets, and corrections after a buyout or hype-driven spike. Whether a particular card has dropped depends on its exact variant, condition, language, and the dates being compared.
What “going down in value” actually measures
Most headlines blur three different things. A single card’s price is the going rate for one specific printing in one condition on one platform. A sealed product price tracks boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, and similar items. A market index averages many cards, often weighted by value or by graded population. A card can fall sharply while the index rises, and a sealed set can soften while a handful of chase singles hold steady. Keep these apart before deciding what has happened.
The causes behind recent declines
The 2026 marketplace reports cite several separate mechanisms. Each one explains a different kind of drop, and some cards are hit by more than one at once.
More copies in circulation
This is the most frequently cited cause. TCGplayer’s May 13, 2026 report describes Perfect Order singles falling as more product was opened in the months after the set’s release, and says Prize Pack cards declined as more copies entered circulation. Its August 18, 2026 report links the Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Box reprints to downward pressure across that set, and says restocks of Shrouded Fable products weighed on cards from that set. An Ultra Rare Poké Pad also faced an influx of supply, even though it kept selling.
#1 Best Overall
- 50+ Pokemon Cards
- 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
Pokémon’s own position is consistent with this. A Pokémon Support update dated May 26, 2026 acknowledges that high demand affected product availability. The company says it is printing more impacted products at maximum capacity and will keep reprinting them to replenish participating retailers, including Pokémon Center. The statement describes intent, not a set-by-set print count, and it does not say that any specific card’s price fell because of a particular reprint.
Competitive demand and rotation timing
Some cards lose value because players stop needing them. The August 2026 TCGplayer report says certain playable Shrouded Fable cards faced less demand as rotation approached. Competitive value is tied to legality windows, so a card that is still legal but nearing the end of its standard-format life can soften before it actually leaves play.
Generous pull rates in new sets
Rarity only supports price if collectors cannot easily obtain the card. The August report attributes a decline in the new Pitch Black set partly to a relatively generous pull rate for Ultra Rares. When a chase card appears often enough in packs, the secondary market fills and prices settle lower.

- The Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black Elite Trainer Box includes 9 Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black booster packs and 1 full-art foil promo card featuring Zarude.
- This also comes with 65 card sleeves, 40 Pokémon TCG Energy cards, and a player’s guide to the Mega Evolution—Pitch Black expansion.
- You will also get a competition-legal coin-flip die, 6 damage-counter dice, and a plastic coin.
- You will also find a collector’s box to hold everything, with 6 dividers to keep it organized and a code card for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.
Corrections after buyouts and hype
Sudden spikes often reverse. The August 2026 report links a Rayquaza VMAX drop from its mid-July high to an earlier buyout followed by reduced sales. Once a buyer stops bidding, the price can return toward the level that independent sales support. The May report similarly describes minor corrections after historic gains.

Shifting collector preference
Collectors do not want every card equally at every moment. The May 2026 report describes differences in collector preference that moved prices of some singles while others held. This is the hardest cause to measure, because it shows up as demand changing rather than as a visible supply event.
What the two TCGplayer reports cover
Both TCGplayer reports use the same filter: Near Mint copies of cards with at least ten sales in the stated window. That gives a consistent method, but the sample is a marketplace subset, not a census of every Pokémon card or every sale.

| Report | Published | Sales window | Filter | Named examples and mechanisms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TCGplayer, May 2026 | May 13, 2026 | April 12 to May 11, 2026 | Near Mint, at least 10 sales | Perfect Order singles (more product opened); Ultra Rare Poké Pad (supply influx); Prize Pack cards (more copies in circulation); collector preference differences; minor corrections after historic gains |
| TCGplayer, August 2026 | August 18, 2026 | July 18 to August 16, 2026 | Near Mint, at least 10 sales | Destined Rivals Elite Trainer Box reprints; Shrouded Fable restocks; Rayquaza VMAX after a buyout; playable Shrouded Fable cards near rotation; Pitch Black Ultra Rare pull rate |
Because the August window ends on August 16, 2026, these examples describe that period. They are not a live quote for October 2026.
Why the broader market is not uniformly falling
A different publisher, TCGCharts Research, measures a much larger set and reached the opposite picture for its own universe. Its mid-summer 2026 market report estimates the value of its tracked cards at $10.1 billion, up from $6.0 billion six months earlier. The estimate is the sum of PSA population multiplied by price across 87,252 tracked cards, computed daily. Within that universe, 86% of liquid raw cards and 92% of PSA 10 copies ended the first half of 2026 higher.
These two findings do not contradict each other. TCGCharts measures graded population and a defined tracked universe, while TCGplayer measures Near Mint marketplace sales of cards with enough volume. A card can be a clear loser in one sample and still sit inside a rising aggregate.
Rank #4
- Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black Booster Bundle contains six booster packs from Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black.
- This is a great option for getting into the new Choas Rising expansion.
- A great gift for the Pokémon collector or player in your life.
Averages also move for mechanical reasons. TCGCharts’ seasonality analysis notes that the mix of expensive and inexpensive cards sold in a given month can shift an average even when no individual card changes price. Its series therefore matches the same card and grade across consecutive months, and it excludes May and June 2026 as incomplete.
Sealed product: a secondary view
TCGinvest’s secondary analysis reports that reprints and restocks coincided with lower sealed-product prices in several historical cases, with later recoveries once the extra stock sold through. Two limits matter here. Pokémon does not publish print-run dates, and rumored unit counts for Destined Rivals were not confirmed. Treat the price histories as secondary analysis, not official production figures, and not a forecast of future recovery.

Use this sequence before concluding that a card is falling or that the market is weak.
- Pin down the exact printing. Record the set, card number, and art or variant. A standard illustration and a special illustration of the same Pokémon are different products.
- Hold language constant. Compare English with English and Japanese with Japanese.
- Hold condition constant. For raw cards, compare Near Mint with Near Mint. For graded cards, compare the same grading company and grade.
- Use completed sales over a fixed window. Compare the same length of time before and after the move, for example two consecutive 30-day periods. Asking prices on listings are not sales.
- Check sales volume. A window with very few transactions can swing on one sale. The TCGplayer method used a ten-sale minimum for this reason.
- Look for a supply event. Note any restock, reprint, new set release, or rotation date that falls inside the window.
- Look for a recent spike. If the price rose sharply before the drop, a buyout or hype correction may explain more of the move than supply.
Do not compare a high-grade auction result with a raw marketplace listing. Those are different products sold to different buyers, and mixing them makes any trend meaningless.
Limits of the current evidence
- The TCGplayer examples cover Near Mint cards with at least ten sales in the stated windows. They are not a census.
- No primary, card-by-card official price index was available. Market-wide conclusions remain uncertain.
- Pokémon’s reprint commitment describes intent and availability. It does not confirm print quantities or attribute any specific price movement.
- TCGCharts’ $10.1 billion figure is a publisher-defined estimate for its own tracked universe, not a total for the Pokémon market.
- Individual prices and stock status change quickly, so any figure here should be rechecked against live completed sales before acting on it.
Card care does not protect price
Pokémon Support lists card sleeves among accessories included with some Elite Trainer Boxes. Sleeves help keep a card’s condition intact, which matters for grading and for Near Mint pricing. Nothing in the evidence shows that sleeves prevent a price decline or raise a card’s market value. Treat them as condition protection, not a financial hedge.
