Then check the museum’s prerequisites and whether it has an open artifact slot.
Check the Archaeologist’s two requirements
- Research Natural History. Find it in the civics tree. The Civilopedia lists it as the Archaeologist’s civic requirement. Civilopedia: Archaeologist
- Open production in the city with the Archaeological Museum. The Civilopedia lists that building as a requirement, so another city without one will not qualify.
The Civilopedia describes the unit’s purpose as: “Find and extract Artifacts from Antiquity Sites to be displayed in their home city’s Museum.”

Make sure the city has the right museum
An Archaeological Museum is required; an Art Museum does not satisfy the Archaeologist’s listed building requirement. The Archaeological Museum requires a Theater Square, Humanism, and an Amphitheater. If the Theater Square already has an Art Museum, you cannot build an Archaeological Museum in that same district. If the unit is still missing, inspect artifact capacity
If you have already trained an Archaeologist, check the Archaeological Museum’s artifact slots in the Great Works screen. A Steam community troubleshooting post reports that a full museum may prevent training another Archaeologist, including when its artifacts came from trades. Treat this as a possible explanation rather than a confirmed rule for every version or ruleset; the Civilopedia confirms the museum holds artifacts but does not state that a full museum blocks unit production. Verify requirements in your own game
The in-game Civilopedia is a reference for the rules shown in your current game. Use it to check the Archaeologist’s requirement list and the Archaeological Museum entry if your edition, expansion, or ruleset may differ.
