PS1 textures look wobbly mainly because the console maps them with affine texture mapping: texture coordinates are interpolated across a polygon in screen space, without modern perspective correction. On a large surface angled away from the camera, that makes the texture’s spacing look wrong and can make straight lines bend or slide as the viewpoint moves. A separate effect, vertex jitter, shifts polygon edges when projected screen positions snap to whole pixels.
Why do PS1 textures warp?
Perspective-correct texturing adjusts texture coordinates using depth, so a pattern on a receding surface appears to shrink with perspective. Affine mapping instead distributes texture coordinates linearly across the triangle as it appears on screen. That simpler interpolation does not preserve the expected perspective spacing on a receding plane, which produces visible distortion. PlayStation Architecture’s graphics explanation and the PS1 GPU reference describe this limitation.

The effect stands out most on large, angled surfaces with recognizable straight lines or regular patterns. As the camera moves, the projected triangle changes shape, but the texture coordinates are still interpolated across that shape in screen space. The mismatch can look like the texture is bending or sliding across the surface. Small polygons confine the distortion to smaller areas, making it less obvious.
Why do PlayStation 1 graphics also jitter?
Not every kind of wobble is texture warping. The PS1’s geometry pipeline uses screen coordinates at whole-pixel precision, so a projected vertex can hop between pixel positions as an object or camera moves. When that happens, the polygon boundary shifts, making the object appear to shake. The architecture overview discusses the pixel-coordinate behavior.

- Texture warping: the polygon can stay in place while its texture distorts or appears to slide inside it.
- Vertex jitter: a vertex changes screen position, moving the polygon edge itself.
These effects can appear together, but they have different causes. Other visual artifacts can have other explanations; “PS1 wobble” is not a single rendering flaw.
What changes when an emulator corrects the wobble?
Some emulator enhancements address one or both of these issues. PGXP features can improve vertex precision and, where supported and enabled, provide perspective-correct texturing. The Beetle PSX HW documentation describes its PGXP options.

| Rendering characteristic | Original-style behavior | What an enhancement can change |
|---|---|---|
| Texture interpolation | Affine interpolation can warp patterns on receding surfaces. | Perspective-correct texturing can reduce that within-polygon distortion where the emulator and game support it. |
| Vertex precision | Whole-pixel screen positions can make polygon edges jump. | Subpixel correction can reduce vertex jitter where supported and enabled. |
Enhanced output is not a faithful capture of the original console’s rendering. Results depend on the emulator’s configuration and the game’s data path, and the two corrections affect different parts of the image.

The ps1-wobble-rom project is a small homebrew demonstration designed to expose both affine texture warping and vertex snapping. Its repository documents emulator logging and measurement tools. The author says the program was tested in an emulator only, so the demonstration does not establish how it behaves on original PS1 hardware.
