A single-player game can require an internet connection because “single-player” describes how you play, not how the game is built. A solo campaign may still depend on the publisher’s servers for license checks, digital rights management (DRM), updates, cloud saves, events, or parts of the gameplay itself. Whether a given title needs a connection only during download and activation, or throughout play, depends on that game and its platform.
Why the mode and the architecture are different things
Multiplayer is a clear reason for a constant connection. Single-player is less obvious, because nothing visible on screen seems to involve another person. The European Commission’s analysis of online game shutdowns, published as an official document, explains that some single-player games and games with less complex features include always-online requirements. The stated purpose in those cases is authentication and protection of copyright and intellectual property through DRM software. [The Commission’s analysis is the broadest official source on this question.]
The same analysis notes that many modern games rely on online connections for other purposes. In its words, these games rely on online connections “to allow a larger number of players to play together, run specific social or developer-led events, or provide continuous updates to the game.” So a single-player label tells you about the mode of play, while the connection can serve several different functions.
Why a solo game might connect
1. License checks and DRM
A game or its launcher may need to contact a service to confirm that the license is valid or to apply DRM. This is the most direct explanation when a solo game shows no obvious online features. The Commission describes this as a purpose of always-online requirements in some less complex single-player games. It does not follow that every such check is continuous, so the frequency of checks has to be confirmed for each title.

2. Features hosted on publisher servers
Some games use a connection for functions that are not multiplayer matches. Common examples include cloud saves, social features, live events, telemetry, anti-cheat, updates, and in some cases gameplay systems that run on a server. The Commission observes that the share of game infrastructure on company servers has grown, and that shutting those servers down can remove access to part or all of a game. Some of these functions may be optional while others are required for the game to launch or keep running. Look at what stops working offline before assuming the whole game is affected.
3. Platform and launcher services
A digital storefront or launcher may need the internet for steps that happen before you play offline. These include downloading the game, activating it, updating the client, or preparing an offline license. None of these is the same as staying online for the whole session.

The two main launcher approaches differ in an important way:
- Steam (SEGA’s guidance): Offline Mode has to be prepared while online. SEGA’s instructions tell users to connect to the internet first, make sure the game and the Steam client are updated, launch and test the game, and then select Go Offline. SEGA also warns that if offline-mode data is lost, Steam may not start without an internet connection.
- Epic Games Launcher: Offline Mode can launch eligible games that are already installed on the device. Epic states that not all games support it. Even when a game qualifies, cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, and other online services may be unavailable.
Offline support varies by game and platform
Official guidance shows that the answer is not the same across titles or systems. The table below lists examples from the sources and what each one demonstrates.

| Example | What the official source says | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Square Enix game support page | Internet is needed to download the game, but not to play it. | A download requirement is not the same as always-online play. |
| Second Square Enix support page | Internet is not required because the game has no online features. | Some games are fully playable offline. |
| Konami support page for Metal Gear Survive | An online connection is required for both single-player and multiplayer. Single-player can be played without a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership. | Internet access and a console multiplayer subscription are separate requirements. Solo mode can still depend on servers. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Offline play works for supported installed single-player games. Not all games qualify, and online features may be unavailable. | Offline support depends on both the launcher and the game. |
| SEGA guidance for Steam Offline Mode | Online setup and testing are needed beforehand, and offline-mode data can be lost. | An offline option can have prerequisites and limits. |
| Sony PS4 FAQ (published 2013) | At that time, Sony said the PS4 did not require a persistent connection for single-player games, and it distinguished multiplayer requirements. | Platform policy and publisher requirements can differ. This is historical guidance for the PS4, not current policy for every console or game. |
What happens when servers shut down
The practical question is how much of a particular game depends on the publisher’s servers. The Commission says that discontinuing support can leave a game partially or entirely unusable. It also describes three ways a publisher might keep a game playable after support ends: converting it to offline operation, handing it to self-hosted servers, or using peer-to-peer connections. The Commission’s review found that such preservation steps are uncommon.
An installed copy, a disc, or a previous purchase does not by itself guarantee future play. Whether a game keeps working depends on its implementation, the platform’s rules, and whether an offline mode exists. The shutdown risk is therefore a matter of how much the game relies on servers, and it has to be judged title by title.

How to check a specific game
- Open the publisher’s official connectivity or support page for the game, and check the version that matches your platform.
- Identify which stage needs the internet: installation, initial activation, recurring license checks, or the whole session. A publisher’s statement that the game can be played without internet, or that it has no online features, answers the question for that stage.
- If you use a launcher, check whether it offers an offline mode for that game. Do this before you need it, because some launchers require setup while you are online.
- Confirm which features stop working offline, including cloud saves, updates, achievements, events, and any gameplay systems.
- Check what the publisher says about support ending. If it describes no offline conversion or preservation path, assume the game will become less playable if its servers are switched off.
Treat a connection requirement as a fact to document, not a sign that every online feature is necessary for the solo experience. The requirement may serve authentication, or it may reflect real server dependencies. Only the publisher’s documentation for the specific game can settle which applies.
Sources and limits
The Commission analysis is the broadest source here, and it covers reasons, server functions, and shutdown consequences. The SEGA, Epic, Square Enix, and Konami pages are primary publisher and launcher guidance, but each one applies to a particular product or system. Their statements should not be generalized to all games. The Sony PS4 FAQ dates from 2013 and is included only to show a historical platform-level distinction between offline single-player and online multiplayer.
