In May 2025 Microsoft announced that select new first-party Xbox releases would carry a US price of $79.99. The most-cited example, The Outer Worlds 2, was first announced at that price, then revised: Xbox’s own announcement lists its Standard Edition at $69.99, and the US Xbox store showed it as $69.99+ when checked on October 8, 2026.
What Microsoft actually announced
The Associated Press reported on May 2, 2025 that Microsoft would price some new first-party games at $79.99 later that year. The same report covered Xbox hardware and accessory price changes, which are a separate question from game pricing. Two words matter in that announcement: select and first-party. The change applied to a subset of new Microsoft-published releases, not to the back catalog, not to third-party publishers, and not to digital games from other studios sold on Xbox.

What Microsoft said about the reason
Microsoft’s stated explanation, as quoted by AP, was “market conditions and the rising cost of development.” AP also noted that Microsoft did not point specifically to tariffs, even though tariffs were part of the wider news context at the time. It is fair to say the company tied the change to costs and market conditions. It is not supported to say tariffs caused it.
The available reporting does not include a named or quantified increase in development costs, a percentage, or an internal pricing model that explains why $10 was the step. Any figure offered as the cause would be invented.

The Outer Worlds 2: the example that changed
The Outer Worlds 2 became the headline case because it was the first prominent game tied to the new price. Its history shows how the announced number and the eventual sticker price can diverge.
Timeline
- May 2, 2025: AP reports Microsoft’s plan for $79.99 pricing on some new first-party games later in 2025.
- June 2025: The game’s Standard Edition is initially announced at $79.99.
- June 8, 2025: Xbox Wire announces the game’s editions, listing the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Premium Edition at $99.99. The article carries an editor’s note reading: “The price for the The Outer Worlds 2 Standard Edition has been revised to $69.99.”
- July 2025: Obsidian Entertainment publishes operational details on changing the price and handling preorder differences across platforms.
- October 29, 2025: The game launches on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, Battle.net, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Xbox’s launch coverage says it was available on day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
- October 8, 2026: The US Xbox store listing shows The Outer Worlds 2 at $69.99+.
How preorders were handled
Preorders were the messy part. Obsidian’s July 2025 update explained how players who had preordered at the earlier price would be handled. Depending on the storefront, the difference was addressed through refunds or credits. If you preordered during the $79.99 window, check the order history on the storefront you bought from rather than assuming an automatic adjustment.

Regional prices and what the $79.99 figure does not mean
A US dollar figure is not a universal price. Microsoft’s publishing documentation, on Microsoft Learn, explains that when a publisher has not set a market-specific price, the Microsoft Store may convert the US dollar base price into local currency. Conversion rates are adjusted over time based on market conditions, and publishers can override the base price in selected markets. The result is that a storefront in another country may show a different number, and no source reviewed here establishes what those local prices are for this title.
| Price point | Amount | Scope | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Announced price for select new first-party games | $79.99 (US) | Select new Microsoft-published releases, not all Xbox games | AP report, May 2, 2025 |
| The Outer Worlds 2 Standard Edition, initial announcement | $79.99 | One title, before revision | Announced June 2025 |
| The Outer Worlds 2 Standard Edition, revised | $69.99 | One title, US, per Xbox’s revised announcement | Xbox Wire, June 8, 2025 |
| The Outer Worlds 2, current US Xbox store listing | $69.99+ | One title, US storefront | Checked October 8, 2026 |
| The Outer Worlds 2 in other countries | Not stated | Local storefront prices may be converted or set by the publisher | Microsoft Learn publishing documentation; no local figures established |

- Open the Xbox store page for The Outer Worlds 2 and confirm which country the store is set to. The price you see is the price for that market.
- Look at the edition you are comparing. The Standard Edition and Premium Edition have different prices, and the $79.99 figure is not the Standard Edition’s current listed price in the US.
- Check whether the listing shows Game Pass access. The launch coverage says Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass were included on day one, but eligibility is tier- and date-specific.
- If you are checking a preorder or a recent purchase, look at the order history on the storefront where you bought the game, since refund or credit handling depends on that storefront.
Buying decisions when prices differ
- If you want to own the game: compare the current listed price for the edition you want in your country, not the 2025 announcement figure.
- If you subscribe to Game Pass: confirm the title’s availability for your tier on the store page before paying for a one-time purchase.
- If you are on a non-US storefront: expect a locally converted or market-specific price, and do not assume it matches the US figure.
The short version
The $80 headline described a plan for select new first-party games at $79.99 in the US. It was not a rule for every Xbox title. The Outer Worlds 2 is the clearest example of how that plan changed in practice, and its current US listing is $69.99+. The official reason given was market conditions and development costs, with no specific cost data attached.
