Because crossplay is not a universal switch: each game has to connect platform accounts, matchmaking, friends, invitations and other online services, while its publisher and platform partners decide whether the experience and business terms make sense. A title may support some platform combinations or modes but not others.
What crossplay means—and what it doesn’t guarantee
Crossplay lets people play a multiplayer game together from different platforms. Epic describes it as connecting players across major consoles, mobile devices and PCs on the same server, but each game determines which platforms actually connect. Crossplay does not automatically mean that progression, purchases, friends lists or every game mode carry over too. Epic’s overview of crossplay explains the basic idea; for a particular title, check its own current feature and platform information.
Why adding crossplay takes more than enabling a setting
Accounts and authentication must work together
Players sign in through different platform accounts and services. A game needs a workable way to identify those players and connect their identities across systems. Epic’s account of developing crossplay describes decisions around login and account linking, illustrating that this is part of the service design rather than a simple game toggle. Epic Online Services’ account of its crossplay work describes that experience.
Friends, invitations and social features need support
Cross-platform players need ways to find one another, form groups and join sessions. Friend discovery, invitations and voice chat may involve different platform services and requirements. Epic’s crossplay overlay, for example, is designed to handle authentication, friends and invites while working with native platform requirements. That illustrates the coordination involved, not a guarantee that every title uses the same approach. Epic’s crossplay overlay announcement describes its implementation.

Matchmaking and game design need decisions
Platforms can differ in controls, performance and player expectations. Developers may need to decide how to group players, what modes to offer across platforms and whether players can choose to avoid crossplay. These are design considerations, not a proven explanation for every game’s decision: there is no reliable cross-title figure here for the cost of those choices or how often they prevent crossplay.
Platform rules and business decisions can also shape support
Platform holders and publishers weigh technical and player-experience questions alongside commercial considerations. In its 2018 announcement of an extended Fortnite cross-play beta, Sony said the beta would let it test the technical and social experience and analyze the business mechanics of opening PlayStation crossplay. That is evidence of Sony’s stated considerations in that specific case—not proof that business concerns explain every game without crossplay. Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement gives the context.

Rules can also differ by storefront. Epic Games Store says multiplayer games distributed through its store must support crossplay across PC stores. That is a requirement for that storefront, not a universal rule for all consoles, PC stores or publishers. Epic Games Store’s distribution information states the condition.
Crossplay can vary within a game
“Does this game have crossplay?” can have several answers depending on which platforms and features you mean. When checking a specific title, verify:
Rank #3
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Platform combinations: whether the relevant consoles, PC storefronts or mobile versions can play together.
- Features that carry over: multiplayer, account progression, friends and invites, voice chat, and purchases may have different support.
- Matchmaking rules: whether crossplay is automatic, optional, grouped by input or platform, or limited to certain modes.
- What opting out changes: disabling crossplay may affect access to particular modes or matchmaking, depending on the game.
Fortnite is one title-specific example: Epic’s support page says that disabling crossplay can leave some modes playable only in Solo. Do not assume the same consequence applies to other games. Epic’s Fortnite crossplay support article describes that setting and its effect.

Some games connect players across platforms; others support only selected combinations or do not offer crossplay. The implementation, platform conditions and player-experience trade-offs differ by title. The official examples above show the kinds of integration and decisions involved, but they do not establish how many games lack crossplay, an average development cost, or how often platform negotiations block it. For a practical answer about friends trying to join, consult the game’s current support documentation for the exact platforms, modes and opt-out rules.
