Why Did Cyberpunk 2077 Feel So Unfinished at Launch?

Serious launch-era bugs and coordination problems contributed to Cyberpunk 2077 feeling unfinished. Here is what the developers said—and what changed later.

Cyberpunk 2077 felt unfinished at its December 2020 launch because players encountered serious bugs and errors, while the developers later described planning and communication problems inside the project. CD PROJEKT RED’s retrospective points to plans made too far ahead in too much detail and too few links between teams—not to one proven cause for every defect or the decision to ship. Later updates substantially changed the game, but they do not change what players received at launch.

What players encountered at launch

Launch-era reports described serious technical problems. In a January 2021 review, TIME reported bugs and errors severe enough to impede the reviewer’s progress, and reported that CD Projekt Red had acknowledged crunch during development. That review documents one contemporary experience; it is not a measured defect rate across every platform or player.

The distinction matters: “unfinished” is a useful description of how the launch experience felt to some players, not an official technical classification. The available evidence supports that significant problems reached customers, but does not establish a platform-by-platform census or quantify their prevalence.

What the developers later said went wrong

In a later AnsweRED Podcast retrospective, CD PROJEKT RED creative director Igor Sarzyński said the team planned specific details too far in advance for a project whose direction and needs could change. He recalled that teams had fewer points of contact and often worked separately, which contributed to mismatches between features, narrative and delivery timing.

Sarzyński summarized the planning problem as “we were creating like too far away plans for too specific things.” On communication, he said, “we had less points of contact, which created some discrepancy between features and narrative, or just like times of delivery of different stuff.” Those are the studio’s retrospective explanations, not an independent audit of the entire production.

Why coordination matters in a large game

When teams plan in isolation, a feature’s implementation, its place in the story and the schedule for delivering it can drift out of sync. That is a grounded way to understand the discrepancies Sarzyński described. It does not prove that coordination problems caused every launch bug, nor does it explain exactly how the final release decision was made.

How the studio said its process changed

The podcast speakers described moving toward shorter planning cycles and teams organized around player experiences, with contributors from different disciplines communicating more regularly. Sarzyński described sprint planning over roughly two-to-three-week periods. That is the studio’s account of its later approach, not an independently verified company-wide policy or a measure of launch quality.

Why delays did not prevent a troubled launch

Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed twice in 2020, so it did not launch on its original schedule. CD PROJEKT announced a postponement on June 18, 2020, followed by another on October 27, 2020.

Those announcements establish that the date changed; they do not reveal what internal trade-offs were made afterward or why the eventual ship decision was authorized. The available sources do not establish that a particular executive, budget limit, staffing constraint or deadline compelled the release. It would be speculation to name one as the definitive cause.

How the game changed after launch

The launch version and the later game are not interchangeable. CD PROJEKT’s company history records the free Update 2.0 release on September 21, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The publisher lists overhauled skill trees and perks, revamped cyberware, vehicle combat and a new police system among its changes. These were substantial changes to core systems, not just a claim that the original launch was trouble-free.

Phantom Liberty launched on September 26, 2023. CD PROJEKT reported that the expansion sold over 4.3 million copies within two months; that company-reported figure concerns the expansion’s sales, not the number of players who received a repaired base game. The company says Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, released digitally and physically on December 5, 2023, bundles the base game, Phantom Liberty, Update 2.0 and additional digital content. These release details are recorded in the publisher’s company history and its third-quarter 2023 results announcement.

Question December 2020 launch Post-Update 2.0 / Phantom Liberty
Which version is meant? The game as players received it at launch in 2020. A later version with Update 2.0’s system changes; Phantom Liberty is a separate expansion.
What does the evidence establish? A contemporary review described serious bugs and errors, but does not quantify defects across platforms. The publisher lists specific gameplay-system changes and documents the expansion and bundled Ultimate Edition.
What does this comparison answer? Why the original experience could feel unfinished. How the game was later revised and expanded—not whether the launch was acceptable.
