August 20, 2025 was the opening day of gamescom in Cologne—and the day Xbox published a hands-on preview of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s public demo. It was a notable day for fans, but not the game’s release date: Team Cherry announced a September 4, 2025 release.
What happened on August 20
Gamescom 2025 ran August 20–24 in Cologne, Germany. Xbox had announced that Silksong would be playable at its booth, with demo play on PC or ROG Xbox Ally X. On August 20, Xbox Wire editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels published a hands-on preview of the public demo.
Skrebels captured the unusual pressure surrounding the long-awaited game: “The sheer weight of anticipation, expectation and, yes, a lot of memes, gives Hollow Knight: Silksong a pretty unique challenge to overcome as it makes a first impression.” That was Skrebels’s framing of the preview, not a statement from Team Cherry.

What the demo preview showed
Moss Grotto and Deep Docks
The demo let players choose between two areas: Moss Grotto and Deep Docks. Skrebels described Moss Grotto as one introduction to the experience and Deep Docks as a more demanding contrast for combat and exploration. These were demo areas, not a complete account of the released game.
Hornet’s movement and healing
The preview emphasized that Hornet moves faster and more fluidly than the Knight in the original Hollow Knight. It also highlighted Bind, an ability that lets her regain health. Those details give a sense of how the demo presented combat and movement; a hands-on preview is not a substitute for a full-game review.

August 20 was not the release date

Team Cherry’s current Games listing says the game is available on PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The release-trailer announcement also named Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, GOG, and Humble Bundle as platforms or storefronts.
