Battlefield 6’s producers said Frostbite was the right fit because the game is built around destruction and the studios already had engineers experienced with the engine. EA later described targeted work between Frostbite and Battlefield Studios on tools, destructible materials, physics and networking. That is the developers’ project-specific rationale—not proof that Unreal Engine 5 could never deliver similar results.
Why did Battlefield 6 stick with Frostbite?
The producers’ explanation had two parts: Frostbite suited Battlefield’s destruction-focused gameplay, and the studios already knew how to work with it. PC Guide reported senior producer David Sirland saying, “This kind of destruction, what we do, isn’t possible in a generic engine.” Producer Alexia Christofi emphasized the team’s experience: “Our studios are used to Frostbite, and our engineers know the engine.” PC Guide’s August 6, 2025 report presents these as the developers’ reasons for staying with Frostbite.
The wording about what a “generic engine” can do should be read as a developer’s view of this project, not as an independent technical comparison or benchmark. The available accounts do not establish that Unreal Engine 5 is incapable of comparable destruction; they explain why the Battlefield team chose to build this game with Frostbite.
What did Frostbite and Battlefield Studios change?
Frostbite was not simply an untouched, off-the-shelf package. In a November 10, 2025 retrospective, EA described close co-development between the Frostbite team and Battlefield Studios, with work aimed at the game’s specific needs. EA’s account of the development identifies several areas of that work:
#1 Best Overall
- Everything You Want to Play: Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content
- Redeem Against Anything on PlayStation Store: Choose from thousands of games, add-ons, subscriptions and more
- Download Purchases Remotely: Add your purchases to your download queue from anywhere online –and start playing sooner

- Download, Play, Delete and Re-install: Content purchased from PlayStation Store is added to your library, as well as being downloaded to your console. So you can delete any digital game from your consol
- Tools and editor: debugging tools and editor enhancements for working with destructible materials.
- Physics: integration work to support destruction and its physical effects.
- Networking: prioritization and culling for destruction and debris, including in the context of 64-player matches. EA’s mention of match size is not a performance benchmark.
EA says the aim was for destruction to leave interesting ruins and debris that reshape player space, while balancing visual fidelity, performance and tactical play. Principal Game Designer Rickard Antroia described the design goal this way: “We wanted the players to create a war-torn battlefield, not a moon landscape.” That helps explain why the team treated destruction as more than an isolated visual effect: its aftermath needed to remain legible and useful to play.
How much does team familiarity matter?
Existing expertise can make an engine a practical choice for a project. Christofi’s comment points to engineers and studios already familiar with Frostbite; EA’s retrospective adds that the engine team and game team worked closely on tools and systems rather than relying on familiarity alone. Senior Software Engineer Talan Le Geyt characterized that relationship as an advantage of an internal engine: “One of the advantages of an internal engine like Frostbite is that we can work really closely with the game teams.”

That is a workflow argument, not a claim that familiarity settles every technical comparison. Switching engines would mean making a different set of trade-offs, but the cited accounts do not quantify those costs or compare equivalent implementations in Frostbite and Unreal Engine 5.

The reporting supports a narrow conclusion: Battlefield 6’s developers considered Frostbite suited to the game’s destruction systems and valued their studios’ existing experience with it. EA’s later account shows that the engine was adapted through collaboration for the project.

It does not establish that Frostbite is categorically better than Unreal Engine 5, that Unreal could not support Battlefield-style destruction, or that the producers tested both engines under equivalent conditions. Gamepressure’s August 5, 2025 report gives more interview context about using Frostbite for a Frostbite-specific game, but its excerpt does not clearly identify the speaker for every quoted sentence; it should not be used to assign an additional quotation to a named producer.
