Black Shark’s smartphone business appears to be over, but the company has not been publicly confirmed as bankrupt or formally dissolved. The evidence points to a gradual retreat: the last confirmed phone generation was the Black Shark 5 series in 2022, the expected Black Shark 6 never launched, Xiaomi’s Chinese stores stopped listing Black Shark products in June 2026, and official phone repair services reportedly ended on July 28, 2026.
Black Shark did not disappear because gaming phones suddenly became useless. It vanished because Xiaomi’s specialist brand lost its strategic purpose, a potential Tencent acquisition failed, the company suffered severe retrenchment, and mainstream phones absorbed many of the features that once made gaming phones distinctive.

The final signs of Black Shark’s retreat
The clearest evidence is operational rather than ceremonial. In June 2026, reports said Black Shark products disappeared from Xiaomi Mall and Xiaomi Youpin in China. The Black Shark Community was closed or moved into a reduced support state, with some functions reportedly migrated to the Black Shark Equipment Box app. On July 28, a Black Shark technical-support account announced the end of official after-sales repair and related services for phones.
Chinese business-registration reporting also said Nanchang Black Shark Technology was placed on an abnormal-operations list because authorities could not reach it at its registered address. That is a serious warning sign, but it is not the same as a bankruptcy filing, liquidation, or court-ordered dissolution.

The defensible conclusion is therefore narrower: Black Shark’s dedicated phone business appears to have been abandoned, while the wider company’s legal status remains unclear. Accessories such as coolers, headsets, and power banks may continue even though the phone line has effectively disappeared. Chinese financial-media reporting, Canaltech, and Frandroid all distinguish the phone shutdown from a verified corporate bankruptcy.
Black Shark was Xiaomi-backed, not simply Xiaomi’s gaming division
Black Shark was founded in 2017 and released its first gaming phone in 2018. Xiaomi-backed investment, supply-chain support, visibility, and Lei Jun’s appearance at the first launch made the brand look like Xiaomi’s official gaming-phone arm.
Formally, however, Xiaomi’s 2018 third-quarter investor presentation described Black Shark as a product developed by an investee company. The safer description is “Xiaomi-backed,” “Xiaomi-associated,” or “a Xiaomi investee company”—not automatically “a wholly owned Xiaomi subsidiary.” The distinction helps explain why the brand could later drift away from Xiaomi without Xiaomi announcing the closure of one of its main internal smartphone divisions. Xiaomi’s investor presentation provides the early corporate context.
Why Xiaomi created Black Shark
Black Shark gave Xiaomi a relatively low-risk way to test a specialist gaming category without attaching an unusually aggressive product to the mainstream Xiaomi name. It could serve as a performance halo, attract enthusiasts, and allow experimentation with gaming interfaces, cooling systems, accessories, and physical controls.
The original phone differentiated itself with features such as:
- VC or vapor-chamber liquid cooling;
- physical shoulder gaming buttons;
- a dedicated gaming interface known as JOY UI;
- gaming-focused industrial design and accessories.
These were meaningful product decisions, not merely a gaming-themed skin. Black Shark’s eventual failure was not proof that it lacked innovation. The harder problem was turning specialist innovation into a large enough, durable business.
Black Shark was a real category leader—but the category was small
Black Shark had credible early momentum. A 2019 IDC figure cited by Chinese financial media said the defined gaming-phone market exceeded one million units that year and grew 50% from 2018. Black Shark reportedly held 47% of that segment, ahead of Red Magic at 39% and Asus ROG at 14%.

Those figures need careful interpretation. They refer to a specific market definition and geography rather than the global smartphone market, and the available evidence is secondary reporting of IDC data rather than the original IDC report. Still, they show that Black Shark was once a strong player in an emerging niche—not that it ever achieved mainstream smartphone scale.
The last phone was the Black Shark 5
The last confirmed new smartphone generation was the Black Shark 5 series, released in 2022. The family included the Black Shark 5, Black Shark 5 Pro, and related variants. The expected Black Shark 6 reportedly never received an official launch.
A skipped flagship generation is especially significant for a gaming-phone company. Each cycle requires chipset reservations, thermal engineering, display and battery procurement, Android software work, certification, distribution, marketing, and after-sales infrastructure. The missing Black Shark 6 strongly suggests that Black Shark could no longer justify or finance a normal flagship roadmap. It is more accurate to say the phone was reportedly planned but never officially released than to claim Xiaomi publicly cancelled it. Background on the Black Shark 5 series is also available, while current-status reporting comes from Chinese financial media.
The failed Tencent deal removed a possible escape route
In early 2022, Tencent was reportedly considering an acquisition of Black Shark. Reports described a possible move toward virtual-reality or metaverse hardware, with the proposed transaction often valued at approximately 2.7 billion yuan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe deal was never completed. Later reporting said Tencent abandoned the plan in May 2022. The amount should therefore be treated as a reported proposal, not a finalized purchase price.
The failed transaction mattered because it may have offered Black Shark both a new strategic owner and fresh capital. It also suggests that Black Shark was seeking a new direction rather than simply expanding indefinitely as a Xiaomi-associated gaming-phone brand. Without the acquisition, the proposed VR pivot and possible financing reset disappeared at a critical moment. Coverage from 01net and Frandroid describes the reported sequence.
Layoffs exposed the scale of the problem
Chinese media reported major layoffs after the Tencent deal failed. One report said Black Shark’s workforce fell from more than 1,100 employees to roughly 100 after cuts in 2022. The same reporting later described a dispute involving approximately 78 million yuan in unpaid or disputed severance compensation.

These claims should remain attributed to media reports. They show severe retrenchment and a loss of operating capacity, but they do not independently prove insolvency. A company can stop producing phones, shrink dramatically, and face employment disputes without a verified bankruptcy proceeding.

The category’s central problem was not declining performance. It was that ordinary phones became powerful enough.
Mainstream flagships and performance-oriented Redmi and Poco models increasingly offered:
- 120-Hz or faster displays;
- high-end Snapdragon and MediaTek processors;
- large vapor chambers and improved thermal tuning;
- large batteries and fast charging;
- gaming modes and touch-optimization software.
Dedicated gaming phones still had advantages: physical shoulder triggers, larger cooling systems, gaming-focused ergonomics, and accessories built around long sessions. But those benefits appealed to a narrower audience. Many buyers preferred one conventional flagship that also offered better cameras, water resistance, software support, resale value, and carrier compatibility.
This created an unfavorable economic trade-off. Specialized phones commanded a niche premium while mainstream products steadily copied their most useful features. The result was category compression, not the total disappearance of gaming phones.

Why Xiaomi no longer needed a separate Black Shark brand
Xiaomi could increasingly sell performance under product lines it controlled more directly. Redmi and Poco could target a much larger audience with powerful chips, high-refresh displays, aggressive pricing, and gaming-oriented tuning. Maintaining Black Shark separately meant funding another software stack, marketing operation, retail channel, support network, and product roadmap.
Chinese reporting also attributed to Xiaomi executive Lu Weibing a 2023 view that consumers no longer necessarily needed a dedicated esports phone. That should be treated as a strategic signal rather than a formal announcement that Black Shark had been cancelled.

The likely logic was portfolio allocation: Xiaomi could retain many of the commercial benefits of gaming hardware through larger brands while avoiding the cost and risk of sustaining a specialist company. That is more nuanced than saying “Xiaomi killed Black Shark.” Xiaomi helped create the opportunity, then gradually had less reason to protect the separate brand.
A four-year unraveling, not a one-day disappearance
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2017–2018 | Black Shark was founded and launched its first gaming phone with Xiaomi-associated backing. |
| 2019 | Reported IDC figures placed Black Shark at the top of a defined gaming-phone segment. |
| 2022 | The Black Shark 5 series launched; Tencent reportedly explored and then abandoned an acquisition; major layoffs followed. |
| 2023 | Chinese reporting described severance disputes and Xiaomi commentary suggesting dedicated esports phones had become less necessary. |
| April 2025 | Chinese financial media reportedly described a Xiaomi-related investment withdrawal. |
| June 2026 | The Black Shark Community was closed or migrated, and phones and other products disappeared from Xiaomi’s Chinese retail channels. |
| July 2026 | Official phone repair services reportedly ended, while the company was reportedly placed on an abnormal-operations list. |
This timeline explains why “Black Shark disappeared in 2026” is incomplete. The visible shutdown came after years of weakening product, financing, and ecosystem support.
What Black Shark’s decline means for existing owners
For owners, the practical issue is no longer whether a Black Shark 6 will arrive. It is whether the current phone can be maintained safely and affordably.
The main risks
- Battery wear: Black Shark 5-series phones are now several years old, and heavy gaming and high-wattage charging can accelerate battery degradation.
- Parts scarcity: Official phone repair was reportedly discontinued, so displays, batteries, triggers, and other parts may depend on local third-party suppliers.
- Software uncertainty: A phone can remain usable while receiving few or no meaningful security updates.
- Regional differences: Chinese, global, Indian, and other variants may differ in firmware, cellular bands, chargers, warranty, and preinstalled services.
- Used-device problems: Marketplace phones may have altered ROMs, worn triggers, damaged cooling hardware, or replacement batteries of uncertain quality.
- Compatibility issues: Bootloader status, Android version, DRM certification, and region-specific software can affect banking apps, streaming, and games.
A used Black Shark 5 or 5 Pro can make sense only at a substantial discount and only if the buyer accepts limited official support. Check the exact model number and region, test charging and battery behavior, verify the shoulder buttons, inspect the software certification, and confirm that local repair providers can source parts.
It is a poor choice for anyone who requires guaranteed security updates, dependable official repairs, strong camera performance, broad carrier compatibility, or a phone expected to last another four or five years.

No. Black Shark’s retreat shows that the category is difficult to sustain as a collection of separate brands. Gaming phones can survive where manufacturers have a strong enthusiast community, distinctive hardware, aggressive distribution, reliable updates and repairs, or a broader gaming ecosystem.

What survives from Black Shark?
Black Shark may continue as an accessories or gaming-lifestyle label. Coolers, audio products, power banks, and other peripherals can outlive the smartphone business, although availability and support should be verified through the brand’s regional channels, including Black Shark’s global site.
That is why “Black Shark no longer exists” is too broad. The more precise conclusion is that the original smartphone ambition is effectively over. The brand may survive in smaller hardware categories, but the dedicated phone ecosystem—new devices, official repairs, community infrastructure, and Xiaomi retail integration—has largely withdrawn.
The larger lesson behind Xiaomi’s gaming dream
Black Shark was a logical experiment: use a specialist brand to explore an enthusiast market, learn which features matter, and benefit from Xiaomi’s broader resources. It worked well enough to establish Black Shark as an early gaming-phone leader.
But the experiment became less valuable as gaming features spread into ordinary phones. The niche was not necessarily too small to exist; it was too small to support many independent product and support structures. The failed Tencent acquisition removed a possible rescue or pivot, layoffs weakened the company, the Black Shark 6 never arrived, and Xiaomi’s mainstream brands made the separate gaming label less necessary.
Black Shark’s disappearance is therefore best understood as a portfolio and capital-allocation decision, followed by an operational shutdown—not a sudden declaration that gaming phones had failed. In a sense, the brand became a casualty of its own success: the features it helped popularize became ordinary enough that Xiaomi no longer needed a separate company to sell them.
