Call of Duty freezing does not have one universal cause. The problem may be a known game bug, outdated drivers, corrupted files, overlays, overheating, unstable hardware settings, or a network problem that only looks like a freeze. The fastest approach is to identify when it happens and work from reversible fixes to deeper diagnostics.
These steps apply broadly to Black Ops 7, Warzone, and other recent releases, but menus and workarounds can differ by game, platform, launcher, and update.

First, identify what “freezing” means
| Symptom | What it may indicate |
|---|---|
| Brief stutter that recovers | Shader compilation, asset streaming, disk activity, or temporary CPU/GPU load. |
| Game stops responding indefinitely | Corrupted files, drivers, overlays, rendering problems, or hardware instability. |
| Crash to desktop | A game, driver, configuration, anti-cheat, or background-software conflict. |
| Console returns to the dashboard | A game crash, system-software issue, storage problem, overheating, or a known platform-specific bug. |
| Black screen while audio continues | Potential graphics-driver, GPU, display, or rendering trouble. |
| Windows locks, reboots, blue-screens, or powers off | A more serious system-stability, temperature, RAM, GPU, power, BIOS, or Windows problem. |
| Only matchmaking or online connection stops | Possibly servers, account services, NAT, or your network—not a rendering freeze. |
Before troubleshooting, note the game and mode, platform and launcher, exact failure point, whether audio continues, any error code or DirectX message, whether other games are affected, and whether the problem began after an update, driver installation, peripheral change, or overclock.

Try these low-risk fixes first
- Restart Call of Duty. If it remains stuck, restart the PC or console.
- Check Activision’s Known Issues page for your exact game, platform, and mode. Also check Activision’s support hub and online-services status.
- Install updates. Update the game, Windows or console system software, and graphics driver.
- Close overlays and recording tools. Disable them temporarily before testing.
- Restart the router only when the symptom is clearly online-related. Do not treat a network fix as a solution to a GPU crash or frozen PC.
If a problem began immediately after a major update and many players report the same behavior, avoid deleting files or changing BIOS settings until Activision acknowledges the issue or releases a fix.

Use the failure point to choose the next fix
| When it fails | Prioritize |
|---|---|
| Before the menu | Game and system updates, launcher repair, drivers, security requirements, configuration files, and overlays. |
| During shader loading | Allow shader preparation to finish; investigate shader-cache problems only if the freeze repeatedly returns. |
| In the lobby or while entering a match | Known multiplayer issues, drivers, overlays, VRAM use, and texture settings. |
| After 15–30 minutes | Temperatures, airflow, power delivery, RAM stability, overclocking, and driver timeouts. |
| Only one map or mode | A game-side bug or damaged content is more likely than failing hardware. |
| Every demanding game | Investigate Windows, GPU, RAM, storage, temperature, and power stability. |
Check whether Activision already knows about the problem
Activision’s Black Ops 7 crash and freeze guidance identifies different patterns by platform: Xbox crashes commonly occur in the public multiplayer lobby before a match or immediately afterward; PC crashes often happen during launch or public multiplayer; PlayStation crashes commonly return players to the system dashboard.
The live Known Issues list tracks reported problems under investigation or scheduled for repair and provides bug-report and PC crash-report forms when Activision requests them. A workaround listed for Black Ops 7 should not be assumed to apply to Black Ops 6, Warzone, Modern Warfare III, or older releases.
PC fixes
Confirm your hardware meets the current Black Ops 7 requirements
The official Black Ops 7 PC requirements list an SSD as required. Minimum specifications include Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, and a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600-class processor, with a Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 970/1060, or Intel Arc A580-class GPU and 3 GB of video memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe recommended target for approximately 60 FPS at high settings is Windows 11, 12 GB RAM, a Ryzen 5 1600X or Core i7-6700K-class CPU, and a Radeon RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060, or Intel Arc B580-class GPU with 8 GB of video memory. The competitive/high-refresh or 4K Ultra target lists 16 GB RAM and a Radeon RX 9070 XT or GeForce RTX 5070-class GPU with 16 GB of video memory.

Intel Arc graphics require Resizable BAR. Black Ops 7 also requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and an Intel or AMD processor with AVX. Minimum requirements are launch and playability targets, not a guarantee of smooth high-refresh performance, especially during shader compilation, streaming, or heavy background activity.
Update the correct graphics driver
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
DxDiagand select OK. - Open the Display tab and note the GPU manufacturer, model, and driver version.
- Download the driver from AMD, NVIDIA, or the Intel Download Center.
- Restart Windows and test Call of Duty before re-enabling overlays or tuning utilities.
As checked on August 18, 2026, one Activision driver page listed AMD 25.12.1, NVIDIA desktop/notebook 591.59, NVIDIA workstation 582.08, and Intel 32.0.101.8531 for Black Ops 7 and Warzone. It listed 581.80 as the last recommended driver for Maxwell and Pascal NVIDIA cards, whose official Game Ready support has ended. Another official Call of Duty page displayed older numbers, including AMD 25.9.2, NVIDIA 581.42, and Intel 32.0.101.8132. Driver recommendations change, so follow the latest game-specific Activision page and the GPU manufacturer’s release notes rather than treating these numbers as permanent requirements.
Repair the installation
- Xbox PC app: For certain
0xerrors, Activision lists Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Call of Duty → More (three dots) → Advanced options → Terminate → Repair. If the error remains, reinstall. - Steam: Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files, restart Steam afterward, and test once before changing additional settings.
- Battle.net: Run Scan and Repair, fully exit Battle.net if the same error persists, restart Windows, and test again.
Verification repairs missing or damaged installation files; it does not necessarily repair external configuration, shader-cache, driver, or hardware problems. Reinstalling is a later step because it uses substantial bandwidth and cannot fix overheating, unstable RAM, or a server-side bug.

Activision warns that third-party input-remapping software, overlays, and recording software can interfere with gameplay or booting, even when they were not visibly active at launch. Temporarily close Discord Overlay, Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, OBS, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB utilities, controller remappers, macro software, hardware-monitoring tools, and third-party antivirus game-mode or injected protection layers.

Reset graphics settings and investigate shaders
After a game or driver update, Call of Duty may compile or rebuild shaders. The first launch or match can therefore take longer or stutter. Repeatedly interrupting shader preparation makes it unclear whether the process completed. Let it finish once, then test again.
For troubleshooting, reset custom graphics settings, cap FPS below your monitor’s maximum refresh rate, temporarily disable frame generation, lower textures if VRAM is near capacity, disable ray tracing, and test fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes separately. V-Sync can also be tested when the problem appears related to frame pacing. None of these settings is universally responsible.

Use the Black Ops 7 configuration workaround only when it matches your symptom
For the current Black Ops 7 PC login-timeout or “Quit to desktop” issue, Activision lists this workaround:
- Close Call of Duty completely.
- Open
DocumentsCall of Dutyplayers. - Delete the players folder only.
- Relaunch the game.
- Reconfigure settings and keybinds if necessary.
Back up important settings first. Activision warns that customization settings such as keybinds may reset and says not to delete other files. This is a reported Black Ops 7 workaround, not a universal Call of Duty fix.
Return hardware tuning to stock
Recurring DirectX errors, black screens, hard locks, reboots, or power-offs should not be treated as ordinary file corruption. Return CPU and GPU overclocks, undervolts, and XMP/EXPO memory profiles to stock settings. Confirm fans work, vents are unobstructed, and the PC is well ventilated. Laptop users should test while plugged in and avoid aggressive power-saving modes.
Monitor temperature and clock behavior, then try a lower frame-rate cap and reduced settings. Test another demanding game. If multiple games fail, inspect RAM, GPU stability, storage, power supply, loose GPU power connectors, BIOS settings, and Windows errors. Lowering graphics settings reduces load but does not repair defective hardware.

Handle TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot carefully
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are current Black Ops 7 PC requirements, primarily affecting launch and security compatibility rather than explaining every mid-match freeze. If either is unavailable, consult your motherboard or PC manufacturer’s documentation. Do not blindly change BIOS settings: an incorrect change can prevent Windows from booting. If BitLocker is enabled, confirm you have the recovery key before changing firmware or security settings.

When “freezing” is really a network problem
A connection issue is more likely when “Connecting to online services” never completes, matchmaking loops, the lobby stops updating while menus remain responsive, players appear frozen, or the game disconnects with a lost-connection message. Campaign or offline modes working normally is another clue.
Check Activision’s services, restart the router and game, test with Ethernet, avoid VPNs and aggressive traffic filters, and try another online game. Do not change DNS, port forwarding, or NAT settings unless the evidence points specifically to connectivity.
When to suspect hardware or Windows
- Multiple games crash or freeze.
- The entire PC locks, blue-screens, reboots, or powers off.
- Temperatures spike before failure.
- Windows records hardware-related errors such as WHEA events.
- The issue persists at stock settings after a clean driver installation.
A single Call of Duty crash does not prove that a GPU, RAM kit, power supply, or console is failing. But a full-system lock or reboot is a different class of failure and warrants hardware and Windows diagnostics.
What to send support
If platform-specific troubleshooting fails, collect your platform and launcher, game version, CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows or console version, driver version, error code, exact reproduction steps, screenshots or crash-report files, and whether other games are affected.
