If the Archaeologist does not appear in your production list, the usual cause is one of three things: Natural History is not researched, the city you are producing in does not hold an Archaeological Museum, or that museum cannot be built because its Theater Square already holds an Art Museum. Work through the checks below in order and you should find which one applies.
What the Archaeologist requires
Firaxis’s Civilopedia entry for the unit describes its purpose in one line: “Find and extract Artifacts from Antiquity Sites to be displayed in their home city’s Museum.” The entry is for the Archaeologist in Civilization VI under the Rise and Fall ruleset. It lists the following requirements, and each one has to be met before the unit appears:

- Civic: Natural History must be researched in the Civics Tree.
- Building: an Archaeological Museum must exist in the city that will produce the unit.
- Museum prerequisites: the Archaeological Museum, which is documented under Gathering Storm, requires a Theater Square, the Humanism civic, and an Amphitheater.
- District conflict: a Theater Square can hold an Archaeological Museum or an Art Museum, but not both.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm Natural History is researched. Open the Civics Tree from the top bar and locate Natural History. If it is still locked, the Archaeologist will not be offered in any city.
- Select the correct city. Click the city that owns the Archaeological Museum, open its production list in the City panel, and search for Archaeologist. The unit is tied to the museum’s city, so a museum in a different city will not help. Community troubleshooting reports describe this exact symptom: the unit is missing in one city and appears in the city that holds the museum.
- Confirm the district and building chain. The city needs a Theater Square, the Humanism civic, and an Amphitheater before the Archaeological Museum can be placed. Check each one in the city’s district and building lists.
- Check for an Art Museum in the same Theater Square. Because the two museums are mutually exclusive in one Theater Square, an existing Art Museum blocks the Archaeological Museum. If that is the cause, you need a different Theater Square in a different city, or you must replace the Art Museum with the Archaeological Museum, which means giving up the Art Museum’s benefits.
- Check the museum’s artifact slots. A Steam player report says that a full Archaeological Museum can prevent another Archaeologist from being produced. Firaxis’s official building entry confirms that the museum holds artifacts, but it does not describe a slot limit that blocks unit production. Treat this as a diagnostic check rather than a documented rule. If the museum appears full, the unit may simply be unavailable until artifacts are removed or the museum is in a city where slots are free.
- Check your ruleset and mods. If every condition above is satisfied and the Archaeologist still does not appear, the problem is likely version-specific or caused by a mod that changes the unit or building. Disable active mods and test again. Civilopedia entries reflect the base game data they document, not every patch or mod.
Archaeological Museum versus Art Museum in a Theater Square
A Theater Square can host one of these two museums. Choose the Archaeological Museum if you need Archaeologists and artifact storage. Choose the Art Museum if you want the art-focused building instead. The choice is permanent for that district, so decide before you build.
| Question | Archaeological Museum | Art Museum |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocks the Archaeologist unit | Yes, in the city that owns it | Not stated in the official entries reviewed |
| Holds artifacts | Yes, per the official building entry | Not stated in the official entries reviewed |
| Prerequisites | Theater Square, Humanism civic, Amphitheater | Not stated in the official entries reviewed |
| Can coexist in one Theater Square | No, mutually exclusive with the Art Museum | No, mutually exclusive with the Archaeological Museum |
Unit cost and version notes
The Civilopedia lists the Archaeologist’s base cost as 400 Production and 1600 Gold. These are the base values in the listed ruleset; cities, policies, and mods can change the actual price you pay, so check the production queue before committing.

The unit information comes from the Rise and Fall Civilopedia entry, while the museum information comes from the Gathering Storm entry. Community reports that match these symptoms date to 2016 and may describe an earlier version of the game. Current patches and mods can change how the unit and building work, so use the checklist above as a guide to what to check, and verify the exact rule set you are playing with.

In most cases, the Archaeologist is missing for one of two reasons: Natural History is not researched, or the city does not hold an Archaeological Museum. If both are in place, look for an Art Museum in the same Theater Square, then check the museum’s artifact slots and your mods.
