Epic’s support pages describe this as a platform account being “already linked” to another Epic account. In some cases the platform is attached to an Epic account that was created automatically the first time you started a game, without finishing Epic account registration. Before you unlink anything, find out which Epic account owns the platform login, because unlinking can cut off access to your game progress and purchases.
Match the error to the right fix
Epic’s guidance differs depending on the platform and the exact message on screen, so start by noting the platform (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, mobile, or Steam) and the full error text. The two messages Epic’s support pages use most often are “This account for [platform] is already linked to another Epic Games account” and “You previously linked a different [platform] account to your Epic Games account.” The table below shows how each scenario typically plays out.

| Platform account is already linked to another Epic account | The console or platform login belongs to a different Epic account than the one you are trying to use. | Identify the owning account first (see the steps below), then follow the platform-specific instructions. |
| Platform login opens an account that asks you to finish setting it up | The account was probably created automatically when you first launched a game, and it may already hold console progress. | Do not unlink it casually. See the automatic accounts section. |
| Progress exists on more than one platform | Each platform’s progress is stored separately and cannot be combined. | Decide which progress you want to keep before linking anything. |
| PC or mobile link error | Epic’s PC and mobile guidance covers these cases with its own unlink and relink sequence. | Follow Epic’s PC/mobile instructions exactly. |
| Steam account link | Epic states that a Steam link restriction can be removed only once every 365 days. | Check the Steam-specific instructions before acting. |
Find out which Epic account owns your platform login
Do this before changing any settings. Epic’s advice is to identify the owning account first, then decide what to keep.
- Sign out of any Epic Games session that might be the wrong account on the device or in the browser you are using.
- Use the sign-in option for the affected platform account. This shows which Epic account the platform login opens. Epic’s support pages say this is the way to identify the owning account.
- Note the Epic account’s display name and whether it appears complete. Do not assume the email on your platform account matches the email on your Epic account. Epic’s documentation says these can differ, so an email match is not a reliable way to find the right account.
- If you can see progress or purchases in the account that opens, record which game and platform they belong to. You will need this to choose what to keep.
Automatically created accounts
When a player starts a game on a console without completing Epic account registration, Epic can create an account automatically and attach the console to it. That account often holds the progress that the player thinks is missing. Epic’s support page on this topic states: “We strongly recommend you do not unlink your console account from the Epic Games account created automatically. If you do unlink this account, you will lose access to your game data when you play from that console.” Source: Epic Games Player Support, “Why does my console account say it was connected with another Epic Games account?”

Progress on more than one platform
If you have played the same game on a console and on PC or mobile, the two sets of progress are not merged automatically, and Epic’s PlayStation guidance says differing progress cannot be combined. Decide which platform’s progress you want to keep before you link any account. Epic’s PlayStation sync guide is at Epic Games Player Support, “How do I get my PlayStation progress for Fall Guys, Rocket League, and Fortnite to sync with all my other devices?”
What unlinking can cost you
Unlinking is the step most likely to cause permanent loss, so review these effects first:

- Fortnite and Fall Guys: progress and purchases are stored on the Epic account. Once the console account is unlinked, that console can no longer access them. Epic’s support page on unlinking says: “Your Fortnite and Fall Guys game progress and purchases are stored on your Epic Games account, so once you unlink your console account, that console can no longer access that progress and those purchases.” Source: Epic Games Player Support, “How do I unlink my console account from my Epic Games account?”
- Empty account on relaunch: if you launch the game after unlinking, a new, empty Epic account can be created for that console.
- Rocket League: inventory and XP can be reset on the account whose progress is unlinked.
Platform-specific routes
PC and mobile
For progress tied to PC or mobile, Epic’s guidance describes finding the account through platform sign-in, then unlinking the account that is in the way and linking the account you intend to use. Epic warns that you should not launch the game between these steps. Wait until every step in the sequence is finished before you open the game. Follow the exact steps in Epic Games Player Support, “How do I get my PC/mobile progress for Fall Guys, Rocket League, and Fortnite to sync with all my other devices?”
Steam
Epic’s Steam help article states that the Steam link restriction can be removed only once every 365 days. This is Steam-specific guidance. Do not apply the same waiting period to a console or PC/mobile error without checking Epic’s current instructions for that platform. The Steam instructions are at Epic Games Player Support, “How to unlink my Steam account from my Epic Games account?”

If you cannot reach the associated email or suspect the account is compromised
If you no longer have access to the email tied to the Epic account, or you think someone else has signed in, use Epic’s current account recovery and support route rather than trying to force a link. The support pages reviewed for this article do not establish how any individual recovery request will turn out, so expect the outcome to depend on the account’s details and Epic’s review.
If the error is not covered by the scenarios above, contact Epic Games Player Support with the platform, the exact error text, and the Epic display name you saw when you signed in through the platform.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Hardware, cables, controllers, and physical media do not address account ownership or linking, so none of them will fix this error.
The cause of the error is account ownership, not a fault with the console or the game, so troubleshooting the device itself will not change the result.

The steps above follow the order Epic’s support pages use. Starting with the platform sign-in and working toward a link is the safest route, because it gives you a clear picture of what would be lost before you change anything.
Keep a written record of which Epic account you chose and which progress you decided to keep. If the support team asks for it later, you will have a clear account of what changed.
Once you know which account owns the platform login, you can decide whether the linking problem is solvable with the steps above or needs Epic support.
