If you can’t launch a Games with Gold title, first check whether it’s an Xbox One or Xbox 360 game. Under Xbox’s August 2023 guidance, redeemed Xbox One games require an active Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate membership; redeemed Xbox 360 games remain in your library without a subscription. For either generation, you must also use the Xbox account that claimed the game.
Check which access rule applies to your game

These rules concern games previously redeemed through Games with Gold. Xbox ended the monthly Games with Gold offer when it transitioned from Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Core in September 2023; Games with Gold is not a current monthly claim benefit. Identify the game generation
Check the game’s listing or tile to establish whether the Games with Gold claim is for Xbox One or Xbox 360. The subscription requirement differs by generation.

Sign in to the account that redeemed it
Games with Gold claims are associated with an Xbox account. Switch to the Microsoft/Xbox account that originally redeemed the title, then check its library. Microsoft explains the account association in its Services Agreement.

For an Xbox One game, verify membership
Check your Microsoft account to confirm that Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate is active. Xbox’s 2023 statement names those memberships for continued access to redeemed Xbox One Games with Gold titles. Plan names and terms can change, so confirm the current qualifying membership and regional terms in your account before buying or changing a plan.

For an Xbox 360 game, check the claim and console support
An expired subscription alone does not explain why a redeemed Xbox 360 title is unavailable under Xbox’s stated rule. Confirm that the title was redeemed on this account and that your console supports it. Microsoft notes that some content may be unavailable or limited on a device without the required equipment or support in its Services Agreement.

If access still fails, note the exact error
Record the error message or code and check Xbox service status or contact Xbox Support. Without the specific error, account, console, and title, it isn’t possible to identify a particular outage or technical fix.
When a membership change may help—and when it won’t
Renewing or starting a qualifying membership may restore access if the game is an Xbox One Games with Gold claim, the claiming account is correct, and its membership has expired. It will not create a missing entitlement, change the Xbox 360 access rule, establish that a console supports a game, or by itself resolve a service problem.
