Most EA app download failures come from one of four places: the EA app’s local cache, an EA server outage or a weak connection, the format or permissions of the drive the game is installing to, or an account limit on how many computers can install a game. Start with the cache and server status, because those checks take minutes and fix the most cases. Then use the exact error or symptom you see to choose the next branch, rather than applying every fix in turn.
Match your symptom to the likely cause
EA’s official help material on games that will not download, install, or load covers both Windows PC and Mac, and several steps differ by operating system. The table below maps the wording you are likely to see to the layer where the problem usually sits.
| What you see | Platform | Likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download never starts, or shows “Waiting for download” | PC or Mac | App cache, then service status | Clear cache, then check whether EA servers are down |
| Download stuck at a percentage | PC or Mac | Cache, connection, or service | Clear cache, then check connection and server status |
| Download stuck at exactly 4 GB | PC | Drive file system | Confirm the destination drive is not formatted as FAT32 |
| Create Folder Error during install, update, or repair | PC | Folder permissions | Confirm SYSTEM has full control of the game folder |
| Install fails to an external drive | Mac | Disk access and file system | Confirm the drive is writable and not NTFS-formatted |
| “Too many computers” message | Any | Account installation limit | Count recent installs and wait as directed |
| Game missing from Library | Any | App cache or account view | Run cache recovery before assuming a purchase problem |
Step 1: Clear the EA app cache
Clearing the cache is EA’s first recommendation for games that will not download and for downloads or updates stuck partway through. It can also help with offline mode, app updates, and games that disappear from Library. It cannot fix a server outage, so if the problem persists after this step, move on to the status check below.
On Windows
- Open the EA app and go to Help, then choose App Recovery.
- Select Clear Cache and let the app restart.
- Try the download again.
If the EA app will not open at all, EA’s help article describes a separate App Recovery route for Windows 10 and Windows 11 that works without launching the app.

On Mac
- Clear the cache using the App Recovery option in the EA app, as above.
- If macOS prompts you, enter your Mac login password. EA’s current download guidance notes that the EALaunchHelper component may require it to clear the cache.
- Try the download again.
Step 2: Check server status and your connection
If the cache is clear and the download still fails or stalls, check whether EA’s servers are having a problem. Server status changes quickly, so check it at the time you are troubleshooting rather than relying on an old answer. EA’s general error-code article also supports this check when you do not have a specific code.
If the servers are fine, EA’s guidance for slow or interrupted downloads is a short list you can work through in order:
- Close background programs that use bandwidth, such as cloud sync tools or other game launchers.
- Disconnect devices you are not using from the network while the download runs.
- Use a wired connection if one is available. EA mentions this option but does not require any particular cable or hardware.
- Confirm the EA app is allowed through your antivirus and Windows Firewall.
- Check for pending Windows and graphics driver updates.
Step 3: Follow the branch for your specific error
If the symptom points to storage, permissions, or account limits rather than the network, use the matching branch below.

Download stuck at exactly 4 GB on PC
EA’s official help article states: “If your download’s stuck at 4 GB on PC, your hard drive might be formatted as FAT32, which can’t handle files larger than 4 GB.” A stall at exactly 4 GB is therefore a clue worth checking, but it is one possible cause, not an explanation for every stalled download. If the destination drive is FAT32, you will need to install to a drive formatted with a file system that supports larger files, such as NTFS, before the game can complete. If the drive is not FAT32, return to the cache and connection steps.
Create Folder Error on PC
EA says this error during installation, update, or repair points to a permissions issue. Its PC steps ask you to confirm that the SYSTEM account has full control of the game folder. In Windows, right-click the game folder, choose Properties, open the Security tab, and check the entry for SYSTEM. Its permission level should be full control. EA also lists running the EA app as administrator among its installation troubleshooting steps on PC.
Installing to an external drive on Mac
On Mac, EA advises enabling Full Disk Access for the EA app and confirming the external drive is not read-only. According to EA’s troubleshooting guidance, macOS cannot write to a drive formatted as NTFS, so a drive in that format will not accept the game files even if it appears in Finder. Choose a drive that macOS can write to, or install to the internal drive.

“Too many computers” message
EA’s account help states that a game can be installed on up to five computers in a 24-hour period. Different computers count toward this limit, and so can hardware changes and virtual machines. If you exceed the allowance, EA says you may need to wait up to 24 hours before you can relaunch the game. This limit explains that specific message; it is not a general cause of download failures, so do not treat it as the reason for a stall or a generic error.
Game missing from Library
If a game you own does not appear in your Library, EA’s guidance points first to its missing-game steps and the cache recovery described above. Do not assume you need to buy the game again. Confirm you are signed in to the account that owns it before you troubleshoot further.

EA app installation trouble
If the EA app itself will not install or update properly, EA lists reinstalling the app among its PC steps. Reinstalling the app is more disruptive than clearing the cache, and it does not remove your installed games in the way some readers expect, so try the cache and status checks first, then reinstall the app if those fail.

Information to gather before you contact EA support
A specific diagnosis depends on a few details. Note these before you contact support so the answer can match your situation:
- Your operating system and version, including whether you are on Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS.
- The exact error wording or code, and whether the download stops at a particular percentage or exactly at 4 GB.
- Whether the game appears in your Library.
- Whether the install destination is an external drive, and its file system format.
- Whether you have recently installed the game on several different computers.
EA’s help material is a good first reference for these issues, though the page you see may differ from the version described here as EA updates its guidance.
