Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMost Steam Remote Play Together join failures come down to one of four things: the game does not support the feature, the host did not send the invite through the in-game Steam Overlay, the guest is using the wrong acceptance route, or a network/firewall blocks the stream. Check those in order; if you can join but the stream is choppy, troubleshoot streaming quality separately.
First, confirm the game supports Remote Play Together
Remote Play Together works only with games that support the feature. Check the game’s Steam store page for Remote Play Together in its feature details. The host must own and run the game; invited guests join through streaming and do not need to own or launch it. Valve describes the feature as allowing the host and up to four other players—or more with fast connections—to play together, but that is a capability statement, not a guarantee for every game or network. Steam Remote Play Together.
Make sure the invitation follows the right path
The host should launch the supported game, open the Steam Overlay (Shift+Tab by default), select a friend, and choose Remote Play Together. The friend then needs to accept the invitation. See Steam’s Remote Play FAQ.
If you are joining on a phone
Steam’s mobile instructions specify accepting the invitation in the Steam Chat mobile app. The game then opens in Steam Link. If you are trying to accept from a different screen or app, use the Steam Chat app flow instead.

If you accept but nothing starts
- Ask the host to verify that the game is running and the invite was sent from the Steam Overlay, not just from a regular chat message.
- Have the host send a fresh invite after confirming the game is open.
- Check whether Steam services are experiencing an outage before changing router settings: Steam server status.
Check whether a network or firewall is blocking the connection
Remote Play can fail when a firewall, router, proxy, ISP, or network policy blocks required traffic. Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, and TCP ports 27036 and 27037, for Remote Play. These are Steam’s Remote Play port details, not a guarantee that every game or setup uses no other network traffic. See Steam’s Remote Play connectivity guidance.
- On the host computer, check that Steam is allowed through the operating system firewall and any security software.
- Check both players’ networks for restrictions. Steam calls out public, workplace, school, guest, and portal-login networks as possible obstacles.
- If either player is on Wi-Fi, check the router for access-point or client isolation. Steam specifically recommends disabling this setting for Remote Play.
- If you manage the router, firewall, or proxy, confirm that the listed Remote Play traffic is not blocked. If you do not manage it—for example, on a school or workplace network—try a network you control instead of attempting to bypass its policy.
Compare wired and wireless results
If practical, test with a wired connection, especially when Wi-Fi is congested or unreliable. Steam recommends wired networking and notes that wireless interference can affect streaming; a cable is a diagnostic comparison, not a fix for an unsupported game or an incorrect invite flow. Steam’s suggested network settings include further streaming guidance.

If you connected but the stream is poor, troubleshoot quality
A stream that starts and then stutters or disconnects is a different symptom from an invite that never connects. Steam recommends wired networking and provides streaming settings for adjusting quality and bandwidth. Its performance overlay can help identify variable network time; consult Steam Link’s suggested network settings to review those options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the usual checks do not identify the cause
There is no single documented cause for every Remote Play Together join failure. The next useful detail is exactly where the process stops: whether the invite never appears, acceptance does nothing, or the stream begins and then drops. If eligibility, the invite flow, Steam status, and network restrictions do not explain the failure, contact Steam Support with the game name, devices, exact error (if any), network type, and the step where it fails.
