If you can’t log into Steam, start with Steam’s official “Help, I can’t sign in” flow and choose the issue that matches what happened: forgotten credentials, a stolen account, a missing Steam Guard code, or a lost authenticator. If that does not restore access, contact Steam Support through the same official site and provide proof that you own the account.
First, identify where sign-in fails
Before changing settings, note whether you cannot sign in through the Steam website, the Steam desktop client, or both. The browser and client use different access paths, so success in one does not prove the other is working—or that your password is wrong.

- Browser only: Check extensions, browser settings, and cookies.
- Steam client only: Check network configuration and software that may interfere with Steam.
- Both: Focus first on account recovery, Steam Guard, or a wider connectivity issue.
- Unexpected account changes or suspected theft: Use account recovery and secure the email account linked to Steam.
Recover a forgotten account name or password
Use Steam’s sign-in help rather than repeatedly guessing credentials. Select the option for a forgotten account name or password and follow the prompts. If the automated process cannot find or restore your account, continue to Steam Support’s recovery intake and provide as much proof of ownership as you can.
Steam says recovery is still possible if you no longer remember the account’s email address, password, or phone number. Use the official recovery route rather than a third-party service offering to retrieve the account.

Fix a missing or rejected Steam Guard code
Steam Guard may ask for a special code when you sign in from an unrecognized device. Depending on your account settings, the code is sent to the email associated with the account or generated in the Steam Mobile app.
- For an email code, check the inbox linked to your Steam account and its spam or junk folder. Steam recommends allowing its support sender addresses if messages are filtered.
- Enter the newest code you received; older codes will not work.
- If you lost access to the authenticator or still cannot get a code, choose the matching option in Steam’s sign-in recovery flow.
Steam describes Guard as “a second level of security” that makes it harder for an account to fall into the wrong hands. A code prompt on an unfamiliar device is therefore a normal security check, not by itself evidence that the account has been compromised.

Stop repeated Steam Guard prompts in a browser
If the browser asks for Steam Guard on every visit, it may not be retaining the sign-in cookie. Steam identifies disabled cookies, private browsing, and browser settings or cleanup software that delete cookies as possible causes.
- Enable cookies for the Steam session.
- Avoid private browsing for that session.
- Check whether browser cleanup settings or software are automatically deleting cookies.
Troubleshoot a browser sign-in failure
Steam recommends disabling extensions or add-ons that could interfere with sign-in, then trying another unmodified browser. If the issue persists, contact Steam Support through help.steampowered.com.

Troubleshoot a Steam client sign-in failure
If the website works but the Steam client does not, investigate the client’s network path and software environment before assuming your credentials are invalid. Steam lists network configuration and programs that interfere with Steam as possible causes. Maintenance, your local network, or your internet service provider may also prevent access; when those are responsible, waiting and trying again may be necessary.
Firewalls, antivirus software, routers, and internet connections can also contribute to server-connection problems. Check Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance and Steam Network Status when you suspect a wider service or connection issue. A login problem alone is not a reason to buy a router or other accessory.

If you think your Steam account was stolen
Start Steam’s official recovery process and secure the email account connected to Steam. A compromised email account can undermine Steam account security, and Steam identifies phishing and malware as routes attackers use to steal accounts.

- Do not give your password, Steam Guard code, or authenticator files to someone claiming to represent Steam or Valve.
- If automated recovery fails, contact Steam Support and provide proof of ownership.
