A Steam friend request can fail because your account is limited, either player has reached the friends-list limit, the request is already pending, or a block is in place. An invite sent from inside a game may use that game’s own system, so the fix depends on the game and its error message.
First, identify which invite failed
A Steam friend invite asks to add someone to your Steam friends list. A game invite is sent through a particular game’s lobby or multiplayer interface. Steam’s friend-list guidance covers the first case; it does not establish one fix for every game’s invitation system.

If the invite came from a game, note the game’s name, the exact error, and whether it affects one friend or everyone. Use that information to check the game’s official support guidance.
Reasons Steam may not let you send a friend invite
Your account is limited
Steam says limited accounts cannot send friend invites, although they can receive them. Check your account’s status and Steam’s official Steam Friends List FAQ. The FAQ does not establish that buying a particular item will immediately resolve the restriction.

You or the recipient has reached the friends-list limit
Steam lists an initial maximum of 250 friends, with five more slots for each Steam profile level. Sent invitations that are still pending count toward your limit. Steam says a new invite will not be sent or received if either player has reached the maximum. Canceling stale requests you sent may free capacity.
The request is already pending, or you selected the wrong profile
Check that you chose the intended Steam profile, then ask the recipient to look for a pending request in their friends list. If you sent the request earlier, it may still be awaiting a response.

A block may be involved
Steam’s blocking guidance says blocked players cannot send friend or group invites or messages. Check your own blocked list in case you blocked the person accidentally. Steam Support says it will not bypass a block or tell you whether another user blocked you, so a failed request alone cannot confirm who blocked whom. Your presence is Offline
Steam says Offline mode signs you out of Community features. By contrast, Invisible mode still allows use of the friends list and messaging, while Do Not Disturb controls notifications. A notification setting might make a request less noticeable, but it does not establish that sending is disabled. Steam explains these distinctions in its Friends & Chat FAQ.

Your account has a Community restriction
If Steam says your account is blocked from participating in the Community, check the red alert banner for the restriction details and duration. Follow the account-specific instructions there or in Steam Support’s article, Your account has been blocked from participating in the Steam Community.
What to check, in order
- Confirm the invite type. If it came from a game rather than Steam’s friends interface, record the game title and exact error before troubleshooting the game’s own invite flow.
- Check account eligibility. Review your Steam account status if you cannot send any friend invites; limited accounts cannot send them.
- Check capacity and pending sent requests. Review your friends list and requests you have sent. Cancel stale requests if needed to free a slot.
- Verify the recipient. Confirm you selected the correct profile, then ask the recipient to check for a pending invite.
- Review your blocked list. Unblock the person if you blocked them accidentally. Steam documents blocked-list controls through Friends & Chat or the profile’s Friends/Blocked controls.
- Check your presence. If you are Offline, sign back in to Steam Community features and try again. Invisible does not disable friends-list use.
- Read any restriction alert. If a Community restriction appears, use the red Steam alert banner for its details and duration.
Other ways to add someone on Steam
Steam lists three ways to start a friend connection: find the person through Community search, use a shared invite link, or select Add Friend on their profile. These are alternate ways to reach the friend-request feature, not workarounds for a limited account, a full friends list, or a block. The Steam Friends List FAQ describes these options.
Is profile privacy preventing the invite?
Steam’s privacy settings control profile visibility, with Public, Friends Only, and Private options. The privacy guidance does not identify those settings as a cause of being unable to send a friend invite, so changing them is not a verified fix. When Steam’s listed causes do not explain it
Steam’s guidance identifies account eligibility, friend-list capacity, pending requests, blocks, presence, and Community restrictions as relevant checks. It does not establish a universal fix for temporary service problems, client bugs, or connection issues. If those checks do not fit, note what you tried and the exact behavior or error, then contact Steam Support. For an invite sent within a game, consult that game’s official support documentation.
