First work out whether you mean messaging friends outside a game or using chat inside one experience: Roblox treats those as separate features, and each has different controls.
First, identify which kind of chat is unavailable
- Friends chat or direct messages outside a game: These are handled through Roblox’s Chat or Party features and depend on your age group, age check, region, and account settings.
- Chat inside an experience: This is for people in the same experience. It ends when you leave, and the experience must have its chat interface enabled.
- Direct chat inside a game: A parent’s control for game direct chat can cover the
/wcommand on a game server. It is separate from ordinary friends chat.
If messages work elsewhere but not in one game, focus on that experience’s chat. If you cannot message friends anywhere, check account eligibility and communication settings.
Check whether your account completed an age check
Roblox says communication settings cannot be turned on until the account completes an age check. Roblox lists facial age estimation and ID verification as age-check methods. Phone verification is not a substitute for the age check required for communication features.
Age checking does not guarantee access to every feature: availability can also depend on your age group, region, parental controls, and privacy settings.

Review the communication settings
For your own account
- Open Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication.
- Check the control for the feature that is not working, such as Experience chat or the relevant friends or direct-chat option shown for your account.
- If communication options are unavailable, check age-check status first.
Roblox’s Experience Chat guidance says: “Users will not be able to turn on chat through their settings until they complete an age check.” Labels and availability can vary by region or rollout.
For a child’s account managed by a parent
- On the linked parent account, open Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication.
- Review the controls for game chat, game direct chat, and friends chat.
Roblox’s parental controls let a linked parent manage these communication options. A restriction on game direct chat does not by itself establish why ordinary friends chat is unavailable; check the matching control.

How age and parental consent affect chat
Roblox’s current guidance describes different access by age group. Users under 9 cannot send direct messages or chat with friends outside games. Users aged 9–12 can text and group chat with trusted friends with safety filters. Users 13 and older have a wider range of friends-chat features, subject to eligibility and settings.
For in-experience chat, Roblox says users aged 5–9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. These age thresholds apply to the specified features; they do not mean that everyone in an age band automatically has access. Age check, regional availability, privacy settings, and parental controls can still affect what is available.

If the problem is limited to one experience
Experience chat works only when the developer has enabled the chat interface. Where it is enabled, press / on a keyboard or tap the chat icon. If friends chat works but the chat window is missing or unavailable in a particular experience, that experience’s configuration is a likely explanation—not necessarily a block on your ability to message friends elsewhere.
If you see hashtags instead of words
Hashtags usually indicate that Roblox’s text filter blocked the wording; they do not necessarily mean messaging is disabled. Roblox filters inappropriate content and personal information, and may rephrase profanity. Roblox says chats for users 12 and younger are filtered both for inappropriate content and to prevent personal information from being shared. This is different from being unable to open chat or send messages at all.

When to contact Roblox Support
If your age check is complete and the relevant communication settings allow the feature, but the block remains, contact Roblox Support with the account-specific details: which chat feature fails, whether it happens in every experience or only one, and what settings you have checked.
Roblox’s age-check help guidance says Support cannot manually verify IDs, remove existing verifications, or update account settings. Do not assume Support can override an age, verification, or settings restriction.
