The most likely reason is that the child’s Microsoft account blocks friend requests. A parent or adult family organizer can review the child’s Xbox privacy settings and allow “You can add friends on Xbox Live.” Adding friends, joining multiplayer games, and communicating by chat are separate permissions, so changing one may not resolve the others.
First identify what is failing
- They cannot send or accept a friend request: Check the child’s friend privacy setting. Java Edition also has friend-request privacy controls. Minecraft explains the account settings in its parental controls guide.
- They can add the friend but cannot join a game: Check multiplayer permissions, edition and version compatibility, the host’s world settings, online-service requirements, and the connection. These are separate from the ability to add a friend.
- An account error appears when they try multiplayer: If the message says, “You cannot play online multiplayer because of how your Microsoft account is setup,” Minecraft advises that the adult Family Account owner review the child’s privacy settings. See Minecraft’s child-account multiplayer error guidance.
- They can play, but cannot communicate with someone: Review communication privacy separately. Minecraft lists “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” as a distinct setting from adding friends.
How a parent can check friend permissions
- Confirm the account in use. Make sure Minecraft is signed in with the child’s intended Microsoft account and gamertag. On Windows, check that the Xbox app and Minecraft are using the intended account too.
- Open the child’s Xbox privacy settings from an adult account. Select the child’s account, open Online Safety, and allow “You can add friends on Xbox Live.” A parent or adult family account manager must change a child’s family settings. Menu labels and paths can change, so use the current Xbox/Microsoft family settings if the interface differs. See Minecraft’s parental controls instructions.
- Check other permissions only if needed. If the child also cannot play online, allow joining multiplayer games and review any relevant clubs or Realms permissions. If communication is the problem, check the separate voice, text, or invite controls. Minecraft’s child-account troubleshooting page covers multiplayer and Realms access.
If the friend request works but joining a game does not
Match the game edition
Java Edition players can play with other Java players; Bedrock Edition players can play with other Bedrock players. Java and Bedrock use different servers and do not join each other’s multiplayer worlds. Confirm which edition each player is using; see Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock explanation.

Check updates, permissions, and the host’s world
Minecraft recommends using the latest release, and both players should be on compatible current versions. Confirm that multiplayer is allowed for the child’s account, the host is online, and the world is configured to allow multiplayer. The official multiplayer requirements and Bedrock multiplayer troubleshooting guide list these checks.
Check console online-service access
Console multiplayer may require the platform’s online service, such as Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online, depending on the platform and its current rules. Check the applicable platform’s current requirements as well as Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.

Check the connection
Confirm both players have a stable internet or local network connection. If the account, edition, version, subscription, and world settings appear correct, Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance also points to network and DNS configuration as possible checks.
When parental-control settings may not work
Minecraft says its parental-control features are unavailable in versions earlier than 1.16.4 and in modded game versions. Update to a current, unmodded version when possible; Minecraft recommends keeping the game up to date. See Minecraft’s parental controls guidance.

What to check next
If the child still cannot add someone, note the exact action that fails—sending a request, accepting one, or joining a world—the platform and edition, and any displayed error. That information helps distinguish a friend-privacy restriction from a multiplayer, world, subscription, or network problem.
