Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo play Bloodborne with a friend, one player must host with the Beckoning Bell and the other join with the Small Resonant Bell. Set the same password under Network, meet in the same area, and stand near each other. If it still will not connect, check PS Plus, the host’s Insight and boss status, then troubleshoot the game’s network connection.
How Bloodborne co-op with a friend works
Bloodborne uses bells to connect players; you do not invite a friend through a conventional party menu. The host rings the Beckoning Bell to open their world to a visitor. The guest rings the Small Resonant Bell to search for a host. PlayStation’s co-op guide says friends should enter the same password in the Network settings, then meet in the same area and near the same location.

For a private friend match, the password is important: FromSoftware’s update 1.04 announcement says players using a password can be matched regardless of level difference. PlayStation’s older general multiplayer guide includes a level-range warning, but the later password rule is the relevant one when both friends use the same password. The guide describes passwords for co-op, not versus PvP.
Check these requirements first
- Online access: The US PlayStation Store listing says PS Plus is required for Bloodborne online play. The game can still be played offline without joining another player.
- Host has Insight: The host needs Insight to use the Beckoning Bell.
- Guest has the right bell: The guest needs the Small Resonant Bell. PlayStation’s co-op guide says it is available from the Messengers’ shop after the player obtains their first Insight.
- Both are online and using the same password: Enter it under the game’s Network settings on both systems. Match the password exactly.
- Same place: Both players should be in the same area and close to corresponding locations while matchmaking.
Troubleshoot the summon in order
- Confirm online eligibility. Check that both players can access online play and have the required PS Plus access for their region and account.
- Verify each player’s role and bell. The host rings the Beckoning Bell; the guest rings the Small Resonant Bell. If the guest lacks the Small Resonant Bell, check the Messengers’ shop after obtaining Insight. If the host cannot ring the Beckoning Bell, make sure they have Insight.
- Set or re-enter the shared password. Open Network in the game settings and enter the same password on both consoles. This is what allows friend matching across level differences.
- Move to the same area and nearby positions. Bell matchmaking is not a remote invite: both players need to be in the same area and close to one another.
- Check whether the host has beaten that area’s boss. PlayStation’s multiplayer guide says the host cannot use the Beckoning Bell in an area after defeating its boss. Try an area where the host has not yet defeated the boss.
- Restart Bloodborne if it was left suspended. If the game remained open through PS4 Rest mode, close and restart it before trying again. PlayStation’s 2015 guidance raised this as a troubleshooting step; it is a low-cost reset, not confirmation of a current widespread bug.
- Check PlayStation Network and the connection. If the setup is correct but the summon still fails, check PlayStation Network service status and review the console’s connection and NAT setup. PlayStation’s network troubleshooting guidance warns that NAT Type 3 can restrict online functionality. Its port advice is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal instruction to forward ports; router setups vary.
What happens after the summon succeeds?
PlayStation’s 2015 multiplayer guide describes a co-op session of up to three players total: one host and as many as two guests. If the group defeats the area boss, guests receive a reward and return to their own worlds. A guest who dies or uses a Silencing Blank also returns to their world, but does not receive the completion reward.
#1 Best Overall
- Bloodborne Game of The Year
- If Bloodborne needs to be summed up, then the prevalent themes would be: exploring the fearsome unknown, intense life-and-death battles, and a familiar yet uniquely new online experience
- From the makers of the infamous Souls series, From Software's PS4 exclusive will attempt to take the tried and tested formula of giving players a sense of achievement to the next stage - especially when Miyazaki, the original creator of the Souls series is back at the helm
- What is promised is a harrowing experience like no other, and fans of tension, discovery, and straight up fun will sure to be excited to play Bloodborne
- If you have played the previous Souls games, then this one is a definite must buy
The Beckoning Bell limitation applies to the host’s cleared area, not every area in the game. If the host has already defeated a boss, moving to another eligible area is the practical workaround.
