A downloaded Nintendo Switch game can often be played offline—but whether it starts depends on how its digital license is set up and whether the game itself needs an internet connection. A virtual game card loaded on the console works offline; the Online License option requires an internet check. Cloud games and some membership-based software need internet regardless of the setting.
Check how you own and launch the game
First determine whether you are using a physical game card or a digital purchase. For a digital game, open the console’s Virtual Game Cards section and check whether the game’s virtual card is loaded on this console. Nintendo says a loaded virtual game card lets the game or DLC play without an internet connection, and other users on that console can play it too. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.
If the game is not loaded as a virtual game card, the console may be using the Online License setting. That option lets the account that bought the game start downloaded software without loading its virtual game card, but the console must connect to the internet to verify the license. Nintendo explains this in its guidance on enabling or disabling the Online License setting.
Virtual game card and Online License compared
| Setup | Can it start offline? | Who can play? | Console detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual game card loaded | Yes, once loaded | Any user on that console | One Nintendo Account can load virtual game cards on up to two linked consoles. Loading or moving a card requires internet. |
| Online License setting | No. It needs an internet connection for the license check. | The Nintendo Account linked to the purchase | Can be used on a console that cannot load the virtual game card. |
| Cloud version | No. It needs a stable internet connection while you play. | Depends on the game and service terms | The game is streamed from a server rather than played entirely from a local download. |
These distinctions and limits are described in Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide, its digital game purchase guidance, and its Cloud Versions of Games FAQ.

What to do before you go offline
- For a digital game, check its virtual card. On the console, open Virtual Game Cards and confirm the game is loaded on the console you plan to use offline. The card must be loaded while online; once loaded, play can work offline.
- If you use Online License, connect before playing. The console needs internet to verify the purchase when starting the game. If possible, load the virtual game card instead before losing internet access.
- If another console is involved, check where the card is loaded. Virtual game cards can be loaded on up to two linked consoles per account. Moving or loading a card requires internet, and users on the console with the card loaded can play it.
- For a physical game card, insert the card and try again. Nintendo says physical games can be played on any console, but a title’s online-only features still need internet.
- If the game still asks for internet, identify the specific requirement. It may be a cloud version, online gameplay, or a Nintendo Switch Online membership check. Nintendo’s “Unable to connect to the Internet” troubleshooting guidance discusses these causes.
Some games cannot work offline
Cloud versions
A cloud version streams the game from a server, so downloading it does not give the console a complete offline copy. Nintendo says cloud versions require a stable, high-speed internet connection; an unstable connection can interrupt play. A license-setting change cannot make a streamed game playable offline. See Nintendo’s Cloud Versions of Games FAQ.
Online play and membership checks
Some software connects to verify a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo gives NES & Super NES – Nintendo Switch Online games as an example: the software must connect to verify membership. Games that require online play or another online service also cannot provide those functions offline. Nintendo’s internet connection error guidance covers these separate cases.

If it still will not start
Note the game’s title, the exact error message, whether it is a download or physical card, which account purchased it, and whether another console is linked or in use. Those details help distinguish a license check from a game-specific internet requirement. Nintendo’s general guidance does not establish the offline features of every individual title; check that game’s own support information if the cause remains unclear.
