If the original PC version of F.E.A.R. will not display correctly in widescreen, check that it is updated to patch 1.08 and that the game is using your monitor’s actual resolution. That patch is identified by PCGamingWiki as enabling Hor+ widescreen behavior, which expands the horizontal field of view rather than simply stretching the image. PCGamingWiki’s F.E.A.R. guidance gives the base-game steps. If you mean the Extraction Point expansion, the instructions differ: its Steam and GOG versions are documented as needing a separate widescreen fix.
First, identify which F.E.A.R. you’re trying to play
The original game and F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point do not use the same widescreen procedure. Check the game’s name in your library before changing settings. The storefront also matters: the cited guidance specifically flags Steam and GOG editions of Extraction Point.

| Game | What the cited guidance says | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Original F.E.A.R. | Patch 1.08 enables Hor+ support; a launch argument can specify a custom resolution. | Update the base game, then set width and height. |
| F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point on Steam or GOG | A separate widescreen fix is required. | Run the expansion once, then edit its settings file. |

Fix widescreen in the original F.E.A.R.
1. Make sure the game is patched
PCGamingWiki identifies version 1.08 as the patch needed for Hor+ behavior in the base game. Hor+ means the game shows more of the scene horizontally at wider aspect ratios, instead of merely stretching a 4:3 image. If you are not sure which version you have, check the game’s installed version and apply the appropriate update for your edition before troubleshooting resolution settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- F.E.A.R. - where it all began: A paramilitary force infiltrates a multi billion dollar aerospace compound taking hostages, but issuing no demands. With U.S. Special Forces in over their heads, the Commander in Chief turns to his final option: you.
- F.E.A.R.Extraction Point Expansion Pack takes you to the next chapter ¿ now Alma is looking for retribution!
- In F.E.A.R Perseus Mandate, uncover the mystery that surrounds Armacham and the truth behind the Perseus Project
2. Set your resolution
The cited guidance lists these launch arguments:
+ScreenWidth XXXX +ScreenHeight YYYY
Replace XXXX with your display width and YYYY with its height. For example, for a 1920 × 1080 display, the values would be +ScreenWidth 1920 +ScreenHeight 1080. Enter the arguments in the game launcher or storefront’s launch-options field for the original game. The exact menu path depends on where you own it.
Setting a resolution only tells the game what dimensions to use; it does not, by itself, establish that the game is showing the correct field of view. The cited source attributes proper Hor+ behavior to patch 1.08.

3. Consider EchoPatch if you need additional fixes
PC Gamer reported on September 21, 2025 that EchoPatch offers high-resolution UI scaling, controller support, an option to disable cutscene letterboxing, and fixes for some high-frame-rate issues. Its report says to unzip the patch into the directory containing FEAR.exe. PC Gamer’s EchoPatch coverage describes those features, but does not establish compatibility with every current edition. Check that the patch supports your specific game version before installing it.
Fix widescreen in Extraction Point
For the Steam and GOG versions of Extraction Point, PCGamingWiki documents a separate configuration-file approach. It is not the same as the base game’s launch-argument method.
Rank #3
- Stand-alone Expansion Pack to the critically acclaimed FPS game F.E.A.R. - Original game not required.
- Uncover the mystery that surrounds Armacham and the truth behind the Perseus project
- Employ new weapons, including the Chain Lightning Gun, Grenade Launcher, and Advanced Rifle
- Face off against a horrifying new enemy, the Nightcrawlers
- Stand Alone Game. Does not require original F.E.A.R. game.
- Launch Extraction Point once so it creates its
settings.cfgfile. - Find the expansion’s settings file in its installed game folder. Confirm the actual location for your installation rather than assuming a fixed path.
- Make a backup copy of
settings.cfgbefore editing it. - Open the original file and change
ScreenWidthandScreenHeightto the resolution you want. - Save the file and start the expansion to check the result.
The same community guidance recommends disabling fullscreen optimizations for the expansion executable. The exact Windows interface for that option can vary by version; use the executable’s Properties compatibility settings if the option is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the original game’s age can be confusing
F.E.A.R. was released on October 17, 2005, according to Steam’s official technical support page. The official manual lists a monitor capable of displaying 4:3 among the minimum requirements and says display settings can be adjusted through the options control panel. That describes the game’s historical baseline; it does not mean widescreen is impossible in current PC versions.

If it still looks wrong
- The image looks stretched: Confirm that the game is using your display’s intended width and height, then check whether the base game is patched to 1.08. A stretched image is not the same as Hor+ field-of-view expansion.
- The original game ignores your resolution: Verify that you entered both launch arguments, with your actual width and height replacing the example values.
- Extraction Point remains at the wrong size: Confirm you edited the expansion’s own
settings.cfg, not a settings file belonging to the original game, and that the values were saved. - You are using another edition: The cited Extraction Point fix specifically covers Steam and GOG. The available guidance does not establish the same steps for every release.
- You are considering EchoPatch: Its reported features do not prove compatibility with every version. Check the patch’s current version notes for your edition before applying it.
