The car may then understeer—push wide instead of following the turn. Try braking earlier and more smoothly, then easing off the brake as you turn. The exact feel depends on the Forza game, car, setup, assists, and controls.
Why the car pushes wide when you brake and turn
Tires have limited grip to share between braking and cornering. Turn 10 says Forza Motorsport’s tire model affects acceleration, cornering, and braking, and that tire compounds and extreme tire temperatures affect grip. That supports the general explanation, but it does not establish that every Forza title models the behavior identically. Turn 10’s Forza Motorsport tire and handling overview
If the front tires are already working hard to slow the car, adding substantial steering can leave them unable to follow the intended line. This is understeer, not necessarily a control lockout or a rule that prevents braking and steering at the same time.
How to brake into a corner
- Brake before the turn. Slow the car while it is traveling mostly straight whenever possible. Forza Motorsport’s driving-line guidance includes ideal braking points and target entry and exit speeds. Forza Motorsport driving-line guidance
- Ease off as you steer. As steering input increases, progressively release the brake rather than holding it down hard through the turn.
- Use smooth inputs. Abrupt braking or steering can make it harder to keep the car on the intended line. Try smaller, more gradual inputs and adjust your braking point if the car still runs wide.
This is general driving guidance, not a guaranteed setting or technique for every car and game. Tire condition, temperature, vehicle setup, assists, and the input device can all affect how the car feels.

Check braking assists and ABS separately
Assisted braking and ABS do different jobs in the Forza Motorsport guidance surfaced by Forza Community Forums. Fully assisted braking automatically applies braking as you approach a corner; ABS responds when you apply the brakes and pulses braking to help prevent wheel lock. ABS does not steer the car or guarantee that it will not understeer. Menu names and availability can vary by title and update. Forza Community Forums accessibility guidance
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Assisted braking | Can apply braking automatically as you approach a corner. |
| ABS | Responds to driver-applied braking to help prevent wheel lock. |
Diagnose braking that seems to stay on
- Identify your setup. Note which Forza title you are playing and whether you use a controller trigger or wheel-and-pedal controls; menus and input behavior are not identical across games.
- Check the assist settings. Look for assisted braking and ABS separately so you can tell automatic braking from a response to your own brake input.
- Watch telemetry or the input display. See whether the game still registers braking when you release the trigger or pedal. This can help distinguish handling under braking from an input signal that remains active.
- Inspect deadzones and isolate the device. Check controller or pedal deadzones, then test another input device if one is available. A 2019 Forza Horizon 4 troubleshooting thread recommends these as isolation steps; they are not a guaranteed fix for current titles. Forza Horizon 4 braking and turning troubleshooting thread
If the problem persists
If the car still behaves as though braking is active after you release the controls, or the behavior seems like a game defect rather than understeer, consult Forza Support for current support FAQs and feedback or bug-report channels.
