Fortnite is not universally unavailable on iOS anymore. As of August 18, 2026, it is available through Apple’s App Store in most regions, including the United States. Australia remains the major exception identified by Epic. Depending on your location, you may also be able to install Fortnite through the Epic Games Store or AltStore PAL, while cloud gaming can provide browser-based access when native installation is unavailable.
Why Fortnite disappeared from iOS
Fortnite was removed from Apple’s App Store on August 13, 2020. Before the removal, Fortnite used Apple’s in-app purchase system for digital purchases such as V-Bucks. Epic then added a direct-payment option that bypassed Apple’s payment system.

Apple treated that change as a breach of its App Store rules and removed Fortnite. Epic had anticipated the response and sued Apple, arguing that Apple’s distribution rules, payment requirements and commission structure were anticompetitive. Apple’s position was that it was enforcing a contractual rule applied to apps distributed through its store; Epic challenged the broader competition implications. The dispute produced multiple rulings, appeals, injunctions and regulatory issues rather than one simple winner.

For years, that 2020 removal made “Fortnite is banned on iOS” a convenient shorthand. It is now incomplete. Fortnite’s return has been shaped by continuing legal and regulatory disputes, and availability differs by country.

What changed in 2026?
On May 19, 2026, Epic announced that Fortnite was returning to Apple’s App Store around the world, with one stated exception: Australia. The return allowed Epic to distribute Fortnite through Apple’s store under the terms applicable to that distribution, but it did not end the wider disagreement over Apple’s payment rules and fees.
Epic says Fortnite has not returned to the Australian App Store because it will not return under what it characterizes as unlawful payment terms and is awaiting a court decision or lawful interim arrangement. That is Epic’s position; the legal status of every relevant Apple term should not be generalized across jurisdictions.
Epic’s return announcement and current support pages are the best places to check for changes.

Where can you install Fortnite on iPhone or iPad?
The following is the position described in Epic’s current documentation, but alternative-marketplace pages can change and are not perfectly synchronized. Check the live installation page for your country before choosing a route.

“Not on the App Store” and “not playable on an iPhone” are therefore different claims. Alternative marketplaces can provide native installation in eligible regions, and cloud services can stream the game through a browser.

How to install Fortnite from the App Store
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for Fortnite, or open the official App Store listing.
- Confirm that the developer is Epic Games, Inc.
- Tap Get and authenticate if Apple asks for confirmation.
- Open Fortnite and sign in with an Epic Games account, or create one.
The current U.S. listing is free to download, includes in-app purchases and shows 2026 updates including versions 41.00, 41.10, 41.20 and 41.30. The listing requires iOS 17 or later. Requirements and availability may change.

Supported iPhone and iPad requirements
Apple’s current listing identifies supported hardware including iPhone XS and newer models, iPhone 11 and newer, iPhone 12 mini and newer, and the third-generation iPhone SE and newer. It also lists selected iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad and iPad mini models.
The model list is repetitive in Apple’s storefront format and may be updated as Fortnite’s requirements change. If the listing does not offer installation, check the exact model and operating-system requirement shown for your device rather than relying on an old compatibility article.
What to check if Fortnite does not appear
- Check your country. If you are in Australia, the missing App Store listing may reflect the current regional restriction rather than a search error.
- Check your Apple Account storefront. The account’s country or region can affect which apps appear. Do not change it casually; Apple may require a valid payment method, subscriptions to be resolved and other account changes.
- Open the direct listing. Search results can be stale or confusing. Use the official Fortnite listing instead.
- Check iOS or iPadOS. The current listing requires iOS 17 or later.
- Check the device model. Older iPhones and iPads may not meet the listing’s requirements.
- Check Screen Time restrictions. Parental controls can block app installation or apps above a selected age rating.
- Check managed-device policies. A school- or employer-managed device may restrict App Store downloads.
- Ignore old 2020 coverage. Articles and social posts written before the 2026 return may incorrectly say Fortnite is absent from every iPhone.
Alternative native installation
In the European Union, Epic identifies both the Epic Games Store mobile app and AltStore PAL as additional Fortnite installation routes. Epic’s current support documentation also lists the Epic Games Store mobile app for Japan and Brazil. Eligibility depends on the country, device, Apple’s regional rules and Epic’s current support requirements.

Alternative marketplaces involve more setup than an App Store download and are not the best choice for every player. Because Epic’s pages contain inconsistent regional and device descriptions, use its live installation instructions for the exact steps available to you. Apple’s alternative-distribution terms provide additional context for the EU framework.

Cloud gaming when native installation is unavailable
If Fortnite cannot be installed locally, cloud gaming can stream it to Safari or another supported browser. Epic lists:
Cloud gaming does not download the full Fortnite app to your iPhone or iPad. The game runs on remote hardware and sends video to your device, while your controls are sent back over the internet. You will generally need a supported country, a compatible browser, an Epic account and, depending on the service, a separate service account.
This approach avoids App Store distribution restrictions, but it is not equivalent to native installation. Connection quality, server distance, queues, image compression, data usage and input latency can affect the experience. Availability and access rules vary by service and country, so check the provider’s current page before subscribing. A controller may improve comfort, but it cannot remove a regional restriction or make an unsupported cloud service available.
Why unofficial IPA files are a poor solution
Unknown IPA repositories, modified Fortnite builds, jailbreaks and unofficial sideloading tools are not normal alternatives. Epic says third-party installation software is not officially supported and is used at the player’s own risk.
These downloads can contain malware, steal account credentials, rely on revoked certificates, stop working after an update or leave you with an outdated build. They can also make troubleshooting and account recovery harder. Prefer the App Store, an officially recognized alternative marketplace where eligible, or an established cloud-gaming service.
