Microsoft’s 50th anniversary content was not one unified Xbox wallpaper pack. Released around Microsoft’s April 4, 2025 anniversary, it combined an Xbox dynamic background, Xbox profile Gamerpics and matching backgrounds, an Xbox Insider badge, a Microsoft Solitaire theme for Windows, and a separate collection of Windows wallpapers.
What Microsoft released
| Item | Platform | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 50th Anniversary dynamic background | Xbox consoles | Personalizes the console dashboard with Microsoft and gaming imagery, including Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, and Fallout’s Vault Boy. |
| Nostalgic profile themes and Gamerpics | Xbox profiles | Uses a Windows cursor, floppy disk, or Clippy motif for profile customization. |
| 50th Anniversary badge | Xbox profiles | Claimed through the Xbox Insider Hub preview system. |
| Microsoft 50th theme | Microsoft Solitaire on Windows | Adds a custom background, deck style, and card backs. |
| Microsoft anniversary wallpapers | Windows PCs and other devices | Separate downloadable wallpapers inspired by Microsoft and Windows history. |
The Xbox material was announced by Xbox Wire on April 2, 2025. The Windows wallpaper collection was announced separately by the Windows Experience Blog on April 3.

The Xbox 50th anniversary dynamic background
The headline Xbox item is a dynamic background, not simply a downloadable image called an Xbox wallpaper. It brings together Microsoft gaming nostalgia and recognizable characters, with Xbox Wire specifically naming Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, and Fallout’s Vault Boy.
Because it is a console-native dynamic background, it should be treated separately from a static image downloaded to a USB drive. Look for it among your Xbox console’s personalization or background options if it is still available to your account and console. Menu wording and availability can vary by console software version.

The three nostalgic Xbox profile options
Microsoft also added three nostalgic visual motifs:
- an old Windows cursor;
- a floppy disk;
- Clippy, Microsoft’s familiar paperclip assistant.
These options combine a Gamerpic with a matching profile background. A Gamerpic is the avatar image shown on your Xbox profile. A profile background is the larger image behind the profile page. Neither should be confused with the dynamic console background, which appears behind the Xbox dashboard.

How the anniversary badge was claimed
The anniversary badge used a different route: it was distributed through the Xbox Insider Program rather than offered as an ordinary profile-setting item.
- Join the Xbox Insider Program.
- Open Xbox Insider Hub on an Xbox console or Windows PC.
- Select Previews in the left navigation.
- Under Available, select 50th Anniversary Badge.
- Join the preview.
Xbox said the badge could take one to two days to appear on the profile. Since this was a preview-based promotion announced in 2025, the listing may no longer be available. If you joined it but cannot see the badge, confirm that Xbox Insider Hub is using the correct Microsoft account, reopen the app, restart the console or Xbox app, and allow the stated waiting period before contacting Xbox Support.

Microsoft Solitaire’s 50th anniversary theme
The Solitaire item is for Microsoft Solitaire on Windows, not for an Xbox console. It changes the game’s background, deck style, and card backs.
To apply it:
- Open Microsoft Solitaire, or install it from the Microsoft Store.
- Select Menu in the top-left.
- Choose Themes.
- Select Microsoft 50th.
- Download and apply the theme.
If the theme is missing, update the app and check the in-game Themes menu. Windows’ general desktop personalization settings will not display a Solitaire-only theme. The option may also be unavailable if Microsoft has retired it or if you are using a different Solitaire version or platform.

Windows anniversary wallpapers
The Windows Experience Blog’s separate collection uses retro colors, pixelated edges, and references to memorable Windows design. One design centers on the four-square Windows logo and Microsoft’s anniversary.
Contemporary descriptions identify the collection as four wallpapers, but the official Windows Experience Blog post is the appropriate source for the current image files and download presentation. They are Microsoft/Windows wallpapers, not Xbox-exclusive assets, and can be used on a Windows PC or transferred to another device after downloading.

For a normal static image, Xbox documents this USB method in its official wallpaper library:
- Download the image to a USB drive.
- Connect the drive to the Xbox console.
- Open the Media Player app.
- Select File Explorer, then choose the USB device.
- Open the image.
- Press the controller’s Menu button.
- Select Set as background.
This procedure applies to static images. It does not prove that the 50th anniversary dynamic background can be installed this way; dynamic backgrounds are handled through Xbox’s own personalization system.

Microsoft made the content available around April 2025, but that announcement does not guarantee that every item can still be claimed in 2026.
- Static Xbox wallpapers: the official Xbox wallpaper library remains an active destination, although its current contents may not include every anniversary asset.
- Dynamic background and profile themes: availability may have changed since the original promotion.
- Insider badge: it depended on a preview listing under Xbox Insider Hub and may no longer appear under Available.
- Solitaire theme: it depends on the current Windows Solitaire app and whether Microsoft still offers the theme.
- Windows wallpapers: the original Windows Experience Blog post remains the official reference for the anniversary collection, but individual downloads can change over time.
Regional account settings, Microsoft Store access, console generation, app version, and Xbox Insider eligibility can also affect what appears. Microsoft’s broader 50th anniversary hub provides additional campaign context.
