Zombie horses were not ordinary Survival mounts for most of Minecraft’s history, but the Mounts of Mayhem update added them to natural Survival encounters. If you still cannot ride one, the cause is usually one of three things: your game is not on the update, the horse is still under its rider’s control, or the horse has not been tamed and saddled yet.

Why older advice says zombie horses cannot be ridden

Mojang’s announcement for the Mounts of Mayhem drop says zombie horses had been present in Creative mode since 2013 but were long absent from ordinary Survival play. Guides and forum answers written before the update therefore describe a mob you could only obtain in Creative, which is why they say it cannot be ridden in normal gameplay. That advice is outdated once the update is installed.

What changed with Mounts of Mayhem

Mojang’s announcement states that zombie horses now spawn as natural Survival encounters. In Mojang’s words: “Zombie horses will spawn in savannah and plains biomes, and they come in a lovely undead green color.” The update’s Bedrock release notes describe the same core mechanic: the horse can be tamed like a regular horse and then ridden with a saddle.

How to ride a zombie horse

The sequence is the same in both editions covered by Mojang’s notes:

  1. Deal with the rider first. Zombie horses spawn with a hostile zombie rider wielding a spear. The horse itself is neutral or passive while the rider is on it, so defeat the rider before trying to interact with the horse.
  2. Tame the horse. Once the rider is gone, tame the zombie horse using the same method you would use for a regular horse.
  3. Equip a saddle. Riding requires a saddle on the tamed horse.
  4. Mount and steer. Once tamed and saddled, mount the horse and control it as you would any other horse.

Java Edition’s snapshot 25w41a notes add that tamed zombie horses can wear horse armor, and that horse armor protects them from sunlight damage. That detail comes from a snapshot page, so confirm it against the release notes for your own version before relying on it.

Where zombie horses spawn

The Bedrock Edition 1.21.130 release notes, posted 9 December 2025, specify that zombie horses spawn at night in Plains and Savanna biomes. Those notes do not establish spawn rates or how often you will encounter one, so expect to explore those biomes after dark rather than plan around a fixed frequency.

Natural spawns Yes, at night in Plains and Savanna biomes Yes, per snapshot notes; biome details not stated in the snapshot notes

Horse armor Not stated in the cited release notes Tamed zombie horses can wear horse armor, which protects from sunlight damage

Mojang states that Mounts of Mayhem is available on both Java and Bedrock Edition and recommends updating to the latest version. Because the Java details come from a snapshot, confirm the final Java release notes for your version if you are troubleshooting a specific world.

Troubleshooting if you still cannot ride one

  • Game version: Confirm you are running a version that includes Mounts of Mayhem. Update through the store or launcher you bought the game from, then restart.
  • Rider still present: A zombie horse with its rider cannot be tamed or ridden. Defeat the rider first.
  • Not tamed: Riding is only possible once the horse is tamed.
  • No saddle: Equip a saddle before mounting. A tamed horse without one will not carry you.
  • Wrong biome or time: If you are looking for a new horse, check Plains and Savanna biomes at night, since that is where the Bedrock notes place spawns.

Which Minecraft edition you are playing matters

The mechanic is shared across editions, but the documented version details are not identical. If you play Bedrock, use the 1.21.130 release notes as your reference. If you play Java, treat the 25w41a snapshot details as provisional and check the official release notes for your installed version before following version-specific steps.
