Pikachu’s name combines two Japanese sound associations: “pika,” which evokes an electric spark, and “chu,” which evokes a squeak. The designer has said that “chu” was chosen for how it sounded and how it suited the character’s small size, not because she was thinking of a mouse.
What the name is built from
In Japanese, “pika” is a sound word tied to sparkling or flashing light, and “chu” is a sound word for a squeak. A linguistics paper on Pokémon names, presented at a 2018 Linguistic Society of America conference, describes Pikachu’s name as combining pikapika (“sparkle”) and chuuchuu (“squeaking”). Those two glosses explain the wordplay that Japanese speakers hear in the name.
What the designer says about “chu”
The clearest primary account comes from the official Pokémon.com creator profile “The Creators of Pikachu” (2018). In it, designer Atsuko Nishida says that she was not thinking of a mouse when she chose “chu.” She picked it because it sounded good and because of the character’s size, and she combined several elements to arrive at the name.
This matters because the squeak association is real, but it is not the designer’s stated reason. Saying that Nishida named Pikachu after a mouse goes beyond what her account supports.

The Mouse Pokémon label came later
According to the same official account, the name was settled first, and the classification of Pikachu as a Mouse Pokémon followed. The label describes the character after the name existed rather than explaining where the name came from.
Why the name stayed the same outside Japan
In a March 20, 2016 Nintendo Life interview by Mitch Vogel, Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara explained that the team discussed whether Pikachu’s name should change for other regions, since its Japanese sound associations would not necessarily carry over. The team decided to keep the name Pikachu worldwide. That was a localization decision, and it is the reason many English-speaking players hear the name without the spark-and-squeak wordplay.

What is and is not established
- Established: the name draws on Japanese sound words for sparkle and squeaking, according to the linguistics paper and the creator profile.
- Established: Nishida’s stated reason for choosing “chu” was sound and size, not a mouse reference.
- Established: the name was kept unchanged internationally, as Ishihara described in 2016.
- Not established: that the name is a literal translation of any single English word. Describe it as drawing on sound associations.
- Not established: any statistic about how widely the wordplay is recognized outside Japan.
For the designer’s own wording, check the official Pokémon.com creator profile directly, since quotations from it are most reliable from the source page.
