Karlach’s infernal engine makes her too hot for ordinary physical contact early in Baldur’s Gate 3. That restriction is part of her story and romance progression, not necessarily a bug or a sign that she is rejecting you. You may be able to attempt a brief kiss in the first romance scene, but that does not mean the obstacle to normal intimacy has been resolved.
Why can’t you touch Karlach?
Karlach’s infernal engine is the reason ordinary touch is unsafe early in her story. The game ties that limitation to her personal quest: her engine and the options available to her continue to develop as the story moves through the acts. Larian described adding more Karlach moments in Acts One and Two so she could reflect on the engine and her available options in its Patch 2 notes.
So if Karlach pulls away or a scene cannot progress to ordinary intimacy, that can reflect the story state rather than a universal romance rejection. The exact point at which an interaction becomes available depends on your game state; the available sources do not establish a single dialogue choice or trigger that applies to every playthrough.
Can you kiss Karlach before her engine is fixed?
In the first romance scene, the community-maintained Karlach romance reference says you can convince her to try a brief kiss, even though the scene cannot progress beyond its first step in Act One. Treat that as a limited exception, not proof that ordinary touch or further intimacy is now possible.

What should you do if you want to get closer?
- Keep advancing Karlach’s personal quest. Her engine storyline unfolds as the acts progress, and the game includes additional engine-related moments along the way.
- Check your journal for quest feedback. Larian’s Patch 1 notes say journal feedback was improved when progressing through Karlach’s engine-upgrade quest. Use the journal to check whether that quest has moved forward.
- Revisit the relationship as the story develops. A scene that is limited early on does not by itself settle what later interactions are possible. Avoid assuming that one kiss, upgrade, or dialogue choice guarantees a particular romance scene.
What if you are playing as Origin Karlach?
Playing as Karlach has a related but distinct case. Larian’s Patch 6 notes say: “When playing as Karlach, if you still can’t touch others, Halsin will now correctly wait until you can for that promised night.” This is a fix for the timing of a specific promised Halsin scene. It does not establish that every romance route or scene follows the same timing.

Larian’s Patch 2 notes also describe a new moment for Origin Karlach to consider the possibility of her engine burning out after her second upgrade. That is one example of the story continuing to address the engine; it is not, by itself, a universal schedule for when every touch or romance interaction becomes available.
