Players complained that the change made 2v2 less rewarding and harder to access; contemporary coverage also described level-cap concerns and long queues. Those reports document backlash, not proof that every player’s experience was ruined.
What the March 2023 update changed
Supercell announced “An Update For Losers!” on March 24, 2023, with a planned arrival on March 27. Modes that had appeared under the Party button—including 1v1 and 2v2 Events with rotating modes—were moved to the Events tab. Supercell presented Events as repeatable while available, with no continues or loss limits.

The update also revamped Pass Royale into Free, Gold, and Diamond tiers and introduced the Season Shop. That broader progression redesign is relevant context for players’ concerns about earning rewards, but the published notes do not show that the 2v2 changes were made for a commercial reason.
How the Events rewards differed
Under the new Event system, players earned Season Tokens based on Crown Towers destroyed, Crown Towers defended, and Elixir spent. Supercell’s release notes said Event play did not award Crowns, chests, or Victory Gold.

Supercell set the Season Token cap at 1,000 per day, boostable to a maximum of 7,000 with a Season Boost, in its 2023 release notes. Those figures describe the announced token system, not a present-day cap.
Why some players said 2v2 felt worse
In its March 31, 2023 report, PocketGamer.biz described complaints about losing Crowns and chest rewards, a level cap, and reduced accessibility after 2v2 moved out of regular battles. The article also reported frustration and long queue times. These are contemporaneous reports of player complaints, not a measured estimate of how many players were affected or a published queue-time study.

The practical disagreement was about what 2v2 was for: a casual mode that also helped players progress, or an Event activity with its own token-based rewards. Moving the mode changed how players found it, while the reward change meant playing it no longer advanced Crown or chest rewards through Events, as described in Supercell’s notes.
What Supercell said about the “Play Again” button
PocketGamer.biz quoted Clash Royale community manager Drew Haycock explaining the missing “Play Again” button: “it wasn’t intentional. there was a bug we found during development so we had to disable it as we couldn’t fix it before release. we don’t want to kill 2v2!” The outlet also reported that Supercell said in a March 31 video it was taking feedback into account and that changes were under discussion. That report does not establish which changes, if any, were later implemented.

What players can verify about 2v2 now
Supercell Support’s Friendly Battles guidance, accessed October 8, 2026, lists 2v2 Battle as available through the Clan Chat menu. It describes Friendly Battles as practice with friends or clanmates and says they award no Trophies, Gold, or Gems. This is guidance for Friendly Battles specifically; it does not establish the current availability, rotation, or rewards of every other 2v2 mode.

The phrase “Update for losers” was used in a March 28, 2023 PiunikaWeb video listing, whose description said the update potentially affected 2v2 for some players. It is a reported reaction, not an independently verified finding that the mode was ruined for the whole player base. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: the Events redesign changed access and progression rewards, and some players complained about those trade-offs and the reported matchmaking experience.
