In a GamesBeat interview published December 12, 2021, the then-president of Com2Us USA pointed to the company’s Coinone investment, NBA Top Shot’s mix of basketball and digital collectibles, and his experience playing Axie Infinity. He also emphasized the hurdles: service restrictions, player resistance and the risk that some games would simply work better without blockchain.
Why Lee said Com2Us made the move
Lee described several signals that persuaded the company to explore blockchain gaming. Together, they explain the rationale he gave in 2021; they do not establish that the strategy later succeeded or that every announced project launched.
Coinone offered a way to learn
Com2Us invested in South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Coinone in 2020. Lee said the company had an interest in crypto but lacked concrete action items, so the investment offered a way to learn about the space. He presented it as an exploratory step rather than a finished gaming strategy. (GamesBeat, December 12, 2021)
NBA Top Shot connected collectibles to an existing interest
Lee linked the emergence of NBA Top Shot to Com2Us’ involvement in sports-related games and collectibles. The NBA’s participation suggested to him that digital collectibles might have mass-market potential. That was Lee’s interpretation of the signal, not evidence in the interview that mass adoption had already occurred.

Axie Infinity showed both promise and difficulty
Lee said Com2Us played Axie Infinity and saw an opportunity, while also describing significant hurdles. The interview records his firsthand impression; it does not offer independent testing, market analysis or proof that the game’s model would work for Com2Us’ own titles.
Web3 fit a wider entertainment ambition
Lee also situated the pivot within leadership interest in the metaverse and the company’s broader entertainment, webtoon and intellectual-property ambitions. He discussed Wysiwyg Studios and a planned expansion of entertainment production as part of that context. These were his explanations of company direction at the time, not confirmation of subsequent results.
What Com2Us said it planned to build and learn
Lee described investments and partnerships as ways to develop knowledge and relationships in the emerging ecosystem. He named investments in Animoca Brands, The Sandbox, Upland and Mythical Games. He also said Com2Us had chosen Terra as a blockchain partner, citing its ecosystem and the practical advantage of working with a South Korean team.
The interview also covered a planned NFT marketplace featuring K-pop stars and entertainment brands, along with wallets and blockchain services for games. These were plans and activities described in 2021. The interview and the later sources cited here do not verify whether those particular plans were delivered or their present status.
The effort was described as a company-wide learning process: Lee said an initially small team broadened as projects accumulated. He said some games planned for 2021 or early 2022 were being repositioned to include play-to-earn or NFT elements. He also expected roughly 10 projects to be announced for the new year; that was his statement at the interview date, not a verified count of completed launches.
Why blockchain would not suit every game
Lee did not argue that existing games should all be converted to Web3. He said some would work better in Web2 and framed blockchain as a route to new kinds of games. As he put it, “There are going to be tons of new types of games that we’ll see in the Web3 world.”
He expected experimentation across different degrees of integration. In his examples, Axie Infinity represented a game built around play-to-earn, while Mir4 added a smaller play-to-earn element to a free-to-play game. Those examples illustrate design choices, not evidence that one approach is more successful.
Lee also acknowledged player resistance, pointing to backlash around Ubisoft’s NFT announcement and Cookie Run NFTs. He said education would be necessary. Those were his observations in an interview, not findings from a representative survey of players.

Practical and adoption hurdles in Lee’s account
- Where a game could be offered: Lee said service restrictions limited where the company could operate its games: “There are still a lot of restrictions on where we can service our games and where we can’t.”
- Whether players would accept the features: The backlash examples he cited indicated that attaching NFTs to a game could meet resistance, making player education and reception part of the challenge.
- How much blockchain to add: Lee anticipated limited implementations as well as games designed around tokenized economies, with failures along the way. He summarized the expectation this way: “We’ll learn a lot. We’ll fail a lot, but at least from a gaming perspective, I think we’re bringing in the best-looking games.”
The interview offers a snapshot of leadership’s reasoning and expectations at the end of 2021, not a verdict on the roadmap’s later outcomes. A 2023 BlockchainGamer.biz interview and a Com2uS Group announcement about Lee’s GDC 2023 appearance provide later context on Web3 gaming discussions, but neither source verifies delivery of the specific Terra partnership, NFT marketplace or game plans described in 2021.
