Forgettable is a judgment, not an official finding. What is clear is that Concord launched for PS5 and PC on August 23, 2024, went offline on September 6, and was permanently sunset by Sony the following month. Sony said the game failed to reach enough players and missed its targets in a competitive PvP shooter market; the precise causes were never established in a public postmortem.
What happened to Concord?
Concord was a 5v5 first-person hero shooter developed by Firewalk Studios and published by Sony. It launched on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 23, 2024. On September 3, game director Ryan Ellis announced that sales had stopped, the servers would go offline on September 6, and buyers would receive refunds. Sony announced on October 29 that the game would be permanently sunset and Firewalk Studios would close. Sony’s October 29 announcement made the shutdown permanent; Concord is not an officially operated online game.

Why did Concord fail?
Sony’s stated reason
Sony’s explanation was that some aspects of Concord were exceptional, but others “did not land with enough players.” Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, also said: “The PvP first person shooter genre is a competitive space that’s continuously evolving, and unfortunately, we did not hit our targets with this title.” Sony said it had spent months exploring options before deciding to sunset the game and close Firewalk. The statement explains Sony’s decision, but it does not give a full causal account, audited sales figures, or financial losses.
Why critics thought it struggled to stand out
Contemporary commentary offered possible explanations, not proven causes. Writing in The Washington Post, Gene Park pointed to Concord’s $40 price alongside free-to-play alternatives, a crowded hero-shooter market, character designs that did not draw players in, and a distinctive Rivalry mode whose purpose could be difficult to explain and whose matchmaking could be slow. Those points are a critic’s analysis and reported experience, not findings published by Sony or a controlled study. Park’s report provides context, not a definitive diagnosis.

The useful distinction is between being different and being immediately legible. A game may mix ideas or offer unusual modes, yet still fail to give players a clear reason to leave familiar competitors. Firewalk’s post-shutdown message, quoted by PC Gamer, described risks combining card-battler and fighting-game ideas with first-person shooters, and acknowledged that some aspects did not land as hoped. That is the studio’s reflection, not independent proof that those design choices caused the shutdown. Firewalk’s statement as reported by PC Gamer frames the experiment without resolving why it failed commercially.
How many people played Concord?
There is no official audited total for Concord’s audience in Sony’s shutdown announcement. The commonly cited numbers are estimates and platform-specific measurements:

Ars Technica’s report distinguishes the estimated sales from Steam concurrency. The Washington Post’s account cites the Steam peak. Neither figure should be treated as Sony’s official player count.
Is Concord coming back?
Sony announced that Concord was permanently sunset on October 29, 2024. The reviewed official announcement does not describe a planned revival, and there is no basis here to suggest the game remains an active online service. Sony’s statement is the authoritative source for its published decision.

Was Concord simply a bad game?
The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion than that. Sony acknowledged strengths while saying the game did not reach enough players or meet its targets. The quick shutdown and the lack of a clear, widely compelling reason to switch from established alternatives support calling Concord forgettable as a market presence; they do not establish that every part of the game was poor. Without a public postmortem or audited business figures, price, character appeal, genre competition, and clarity of the pitch remain plausible factors raised by critics—not a proven single cause.
