Counter-Strike 2’s October 2025 Trade Up Contract change gave players a new way to obtain knives and gloves, and third-party trackers recorded a sharp decline in the estimated value of the skin market soon afterward. The widely reported “$2 billion wiped out” figure describes an estimated market-value drop—not $2 billion in cash losses or a verified tally of what players lost.
What changed in the October 2025 update?
Coverage of the update reported that Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts to include two new routes to premium items:
- Five regular Covert-quality items could be traded for one regular knife or gloves item from one of the collections represented in the contract.
- Five StatTrak Covert items could be traded for one StatTrak knife.
Before this change, players obtained these premium item categories through case openings or market purchases, rather than this guaranteed trade-up route. The change therefore altered how items could enter circulation; it did not guarantee a profitable outcome for a player submitting skins. The mechanics are described by Notebookcheck, PC Gamer and Dot Esports.
What does “$2 billion wiped out” mean?
Notebookcheck reported that PriceEmpire’s tracker put the total skin market’s estimated value at roughly $6 billion before the change and about $4.27 billion less than 24 hours later. Dot Esports later described the October 2025 drop as an estimated $1.7 billion in market value within 24 hours. These are third-party market-value estimates, not audited accounts of cash leaving the market.

The difference between the reported figures is a reason to treat the headline amount as an approximation. PC Gamer cautioned that broad dollar valuations are difficult to establish firmly: estimates draw on third-party skin platforms and trader activity, while off-platform and crypto-linked transactions make the market harder to measure. The available reporting does not establish a verified total of realized player losses, a count of affected holders, or a confirmed amount of cash removed from the market.
How did the change affect different skins?
Knives and gloves
With a new trade-up path to these items, reporting described knives and gloves as facing downward repricing. Notebookcheck said some expensive knives fell by 40%–60% in the period after the update. That range is a reported effect for some high-priced knives, not an audited measurement for every item or a claim about current prices.

Covert skins used as inputs
The new contracts also gave Covert skins a direct use as trade-up inputs. Coverage reported increased demand and value for these items. In basic supply-and-demand terms, a newly available route to create knives and gloves can put pressure on their scarcity, while greater utility for the inputs can support demand for them. That explains the direction of the reported effects, but it is not a complete quantitative account of every price movement.
Why a market-value drop is not an individual loss
A tracker’s estimate of aggregate market value is not the same as the price a particular player would receive in a completed sale. An individual holder’s outcome depends on which items they own, their sale prices, whether they sold, and when they did so. A falling aggregate estimate cannot by itself show how much any one player gained or lost.

When comparing accounts of the event, check which tracker an estimate uses, the period it covers, which item categories it measures, and whether it describes estimated market value, completed transactions or realized holder losses. Those measures answer different questions.

PC Gamer’s October 2025 report reproduced a general statement from the Counter-Strike development team in a 2023 interview:

“We generally only look at market prices when we’re thinking about shipping new stuff and want to understand players’ preferences. Players’ interest in items fluctuates over time for many reasons so outside of that context we try not to read too much into temporal changes. And as we were leading up to CS2 we were focused on other areas of the game, so while there may have been lots of interesting things going on in the market, we weren’t paying attention.”
This was historical context about how the team viewed market prices generally. It was not Valve’s explanation for the October 2025 update or a response to the reported decline. The cited coverage does not establish a direct Valve explanation for the market impact.
