Wizards says it could not sustain the support and quality it wanted. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has also pointed to high system requirements and limits when handling many objects. The company has described D&D Maps as a future 2D, browser-based direction, but has not established it as a launched replacement or promised that Sigil campaigns will transfer.
Why is Wizards ending development on Sigil?
Wizards of the Coast says it could not sustain the level of ongoing support or the quality standard it wanted for Sigil. Its official Sigil Sunset FAQ, updated January 28, 2026, says ending development will let the company focus on future digital D&D experiences informed by Sigil and user feedback.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks identified technical trade-offs in a GamesRadar+ interview/report published May 19, 2026. He said Sigil’s system requirements were too high and that its design struggled to handle many objects unless a player had a high-end gaming computer. Cocks described the decision to stop the project as painful, while saying Hasbro still aspired to build a fun map experience.
When will Sigil shut down, and what can users do until then?
According to the FAQ, Sigil is scheduled to remain available through October 31, 2026. Until then, users can continue playing, hosting campaigns, and using the service’s current features. The date is the announced schedule, not a confirmation that the shutdown has already happened.

After Sigil’s servers go offline, content created in the service will no longer be accessible. Before then, Wizards recommends saving images users want to keep and copying important notes and journal entries outside Sigil. The FAQ does not describe an export or migration path for campaigns or other creations.
What is D&D Maps, and will it replace Sigil?
Cocks described D&D Maps as a 2D, browser-based system intended to run on an iPad or a low-end Windows PC, carrying forward some concepts from Sigil. That is a stated direction, not a complete product specification. The available statements do not establish Maps’ final features, release date, price, geographic availability, or technical requirements beyond those broad device examples.

The FAQ described a six-month Master Tier credit for eligible users, but its eligibility period and January 6, 2026 redemption deadline have passed, so it is no longer claimable. It separately lists a replacement digital-dice code for qualifying preorders of 2024 Core Rulebook bundles and a Sigil Dragon character-sheet backdrop for registered D&D Beyond users. Those are distinct from recovering Sigil campaigns; consult the FAQ for the stated eligibility and redemption terms.
